Topper: "I'm not sure why this is a problem. A lot of people think "SMU" is Southern Miss."
Absolutely correct. I was in San Francisco this past week & sure enough, someone ask me that when they saw my lic. plate bracket. Long live "Southern Methodist"!
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Should've asked them when the Dons changed their nickname to the Bulls

this is one of the more inane threads I have ever read on Ponyfans. You can sure tell we are between seasons.

SMU please. If someone mistakes us for Southern Miss, just taser them. They'll never confuse the two schools again. Ever.

If it is a crazy subject why does the University have an official position on it?
"Southern methodist" as it pertains to our athletics sounds too small and too churchy - SMU denotes bigger and more national - therefore we should all go with that and encourage it in our dialog with any media people. It also helps with corporate underwriting. For example - corporate america does not typically want to associate with a particular religious group - but they will snuggle up to a well known and popular "SMU".
It is perfectly rational to want to advance and control your brand - "SMU" is our brand and if we dont mark our territory someone else will usurp it.

Let's get the Phony Pony killed first, then concentrate on the SMU/Southern Methodist issue. Priorities.

i just dont understand how someone would not see this as a valid subject for an SMU athletics board. You'd have to be brain dead not to realize branding matters for college athletics. Nothing immature about that realization at all. Quite the opposite.

I am in agreement with calling it SMU. Too many box score have us as So. Methodist or Southern Meth. You dont ever see Cal-Los Angeles?! There is alot to branding and we need to work on that.

Southern Methodist sounds refined, but to too many it sounds like a backwoods bible college teaching the earth is 6000 years old. We need SMU to highlight us as a national university.

I happen to like Southern Methodist. It has more class and less abc-ism of SMU.

Smu denotes small time. Quick: name a big time athletic program denoted by letters... Ohio State? Boise State, Miami, Texas, Oklahoma? Nope. We may refer to Okla as Ou and Texas as UT, but ever hear a national broadcast say that? The only one I can possible think of is UCLA. Unique. The biggest criticism of the WAC16 was the "abc schools..."
