I'd rather be undefeated and be in the CUSA and complaining about not being in the championship game than join the Big12 and be a sort of middle of the pack team with 2-3+ losses (or more) ... not to say we couldn't still be undefeated in a Big12 type conference but ... rather be a big fish in a small pond and build our brand that way. I know there's a lot more money to be possibly earned in an AQ conference but last time I checked SMU's got plenty of money. I look forward to beating TCU and any of those other 'big' schools ... JUST WIN!!! Then again, I'm not from Texas and didn't grow up there so I could care less about the regional rivalries ... personally, since I live in SoCal I'd rather see SMU join a Pac12 / Pac 16 than anything ... ;-)

Rising tide lifts all boats. TCU's tide just rose. TCU will do very well in the Big12. A middle of the road team in a non-BCS will become middle of the road in a BCS conference because their effort and commitment is middle of the road. A winning non-BCS will win in the BCS in time.

So I've been thinking about it and actually most of this conference reallingnment talk is not as life or death As even I hve felt before. AT End of the day there still needs to be a way for a team outside AQ confrences to participate in the BCS bowls or the entire scheme has serious anti-trust issues (personally i think they already have anti-trust issues but I see some of their merits). The benifit of being in a aq confe\erence is you get more money from tv and you generate more auto money from BCS games. they are nice things but do not make or break a program.

If we build to the point where we are like Boise and TCU (we win our conference almost every year and go undefeated or only have 1 loss each year we will be fine. we will get recruites who can play and will get our shots at the sugar, rose, fiesta, or orange bowl, hell if the chips fall right maybe even the NCG.

Tell that to our track or baseball team. The reality is that football and men's basketball are the only sports that have any chance of making money, and therefore the other sports largely depend on them for funding. Being in a conference with higher revenue from TV and bowl games would make it easier for us to maintain our non-revenue sports.

SMU needs to focus money and resources into bringing in scouting talent. Guys with proven track records of finding and spotting recruits that can play but maybe aren't flashy in ways that get the star ratings. Sometime coaches aren't the best people to do this. We need that fat kid from Moneyball.
