Being in the Big XII aka a relevant conference doesn't hurt.

I think probably the most important contribution of a successful BB program is that will increase SMU's popularity with local schools. If and when SMU is "cool" again, not only will you see increasing applications and rising average test scores, but I would think you'd also see an uptick in local recruiting.

When you start seeing kids around town wearing red & blue instead of burnt orange or black & silver, things will be headed in the right direction again.

It is going to take more than Jones. The people of SMU have to become real fans, not just boulevarders. I think they need the fans of Dallas to fill the stands. What football player wants to run on the field to an appreciative crowd of 8000 people in a 32000 seat stadium?

We're going to have to win big for that to happen, which is pretty much on June as long as he is here (being the one responsible for our football product). This is a Big 12/SEC town, so there's not a vast abundance of people here that will ever have any interest in SMU football (unless their team is playing at Ford).

As Ben Gottschalk put it “People aren’t going to turn off the Michigan vs. Alabama game to watch SMU vs. Tulane, I think if we beat schools like Texas A&M, or even started going to BCS games, that people would actually show up." As for attendance, ask Larry Brown how much playing in front of nobody is hurting recruiting (2 5 stars in 18 months).
