Spavital is regarded by many as one of the brightest young coaches in football. He helped groom Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State) and Geno Smith (WVU) and now will be hands-on with Manziel.

He's a Missouri State grad and is only 27-28 years old. Kliff wouldn't have been hired at Tech is he wasn't a grad and star player under Leach. I thought programs like NMSU and UAB would be better starting points for Jake but their coaches are just 1 and 2 years into their regimes at those storied programs.

Hasn't been a playcaller yet, not much of a recruiting profile (especially when compared to some of his fellow Aggie assistants). There are much better fits for our needs out there than him.

Yep, but bringing him in as an offensive coordinator may not be a bad move (would be similar to ECU bringing in Lincoln Riley as their OC)

WV looked as bad and out coached against MD as we looked yesterday. This guy won big his first several years with his forced out predecessor's recruits. Now he is playing mainly with his recruits and they look mismatched against a MD team that is without a great amount of talent and mainly very young players. We do not need Mr. H.

I thought Mumme was our genius OC move.

I'm bullish on Mumme - he has added some nice things to the offense and has eliminated the Sideline Sprint. However, in the end, there's only so much he can do under June's guidance

Forget the high schools guys. If June goes after the season, you have to bring in someone with skins on the wall to go head to head with the administration and win, ala Brown. Someone with no pro/college experience and not a big name is going to get run over.

I would not do Fran either. His player evaluation at A&M was awful, left them completely bare of talent. I think it is pretty obvious that his assistants at TCU were doing the player evaluation and that is why TCU has continued to be successful after he left.

My dream: football boosters humiliated by the success of basketball come cash blazing. Fund a top-5 salary coach with top 5 funded staff. You cant hope to find a "Larry Brown" but a proven commodity at BCS level. A real splash hire the SMU way - pure hard currency.

Here is my idea. We hire Brian Schottenheimer, son of Marty Schottenheimer, with the provision that Marty join his son’s staff to offer coaching and recruiting support. Look at each of their bios on Wikipedia: Marty, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Schottenheimer; Brian, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Schottenheimer.

Marty has an incredible winning percentage over his years of coaching and has ties to many successful current and former head NFL coaches. And, although a Steeler’s fan, I always liked the way his teams played, which was hard-nosed football with a balanced offensive game plan. His son is currently the offensive coordinator with the Rams and has had other successful assistant coaching stints with other NFL teams. Marty still has some name recognition, and I believe his long term ties to the NFL will be beneficial with regard to evaluating talent and recruiting. Thoughts?

The thing about Brown is that he put together a heck of a staff and took advise from people in the industry. Whoever is the next coach needs to put together a solid staff. Coach Brown would not have had the success he has had in recruiting with the staff he has. They key will be the staff the next coach puts together.

Looking at some of the names you mentioned. I just have one question for you. . . Are you currently in Colorado?

Why? If you support the mustangs, you always hope for the best to support the team, even if requires you to be both blind and insane. I thought that's why we talk about beating a&m and making it to a bcs bowl.
