Please don't give me the crap about a recruiting class as he does not recruit. There would have been no pay out and both parties could have just moved on. So, in effect it would have probably been less financially intrusive than an extension. Instead we give him an extension. I realize that it may be easy to let him go after this next season but obviously there is some type of buyout. Has RGT totally sold his soul to the devil (CofC)?
IMO the financial cost to us will end up being far greater with the extension than not offering him one.
We had 3 real options in dealing with June and the paper extension was the most palatable. Firing him would have cost money no one was willing to pay and letting him ride out his existing contract would have looked totally bush league (like SMU isn't committed to football which June has a lot of people believing). The paper extension creates the illusion of stability while giving June another season to cut his own throat which will make it easier to fire June and avoid huge PR/financial issues.
You are assuming that there is some form of buy out that would allow for a firing and cheap financial settlement. I am not sure any person would allow such a clause in a contract. My reading on this is that JJ is here for the duration of his extension.
