Also, with paying the student athetes coming up, I suspect many schools will have to drop the more expensive to maintain sports like baseball, softball, soccer and swimming as happened with Title 9 years ago.
Hell no! AusTxPony wrote:If we joined those conferences, we could afford to have baseball and softball both as well as what we've got now.
Actually, the money from a conference with more lucrative TV and bowl contracts probably would be used to pay down the current athletic deficit. It's hard to imagine any sport, or at least any men's sport, being added any time in the near future.

Yes, trade baseball for soccer. And I'm saying that as a former soccer player. With the MLS academy team system, the best players don't generally play college ball. The sparse scholarship money isn't enough to entice most good players anymore compared to a professional contract. There are exceptions but what you are seeing is mostly tier-two talent. You can make the argument (and be right) that the same thing is true for college baseball; however 1) there'd more interest on the campus and locally for baseball, 2) it's more expensive to field a baseball team but there's more opportunities for revenue in comparison and 3) we'd better align ourselves with P5 and regional teams who have baseball and only club soccer.

Almost 40% of the Super Regionals are G5 schools. Guess the P5 will want to separate from the G5 ASAP . . . Also old enough to remember/watched SMU Baseball, and still want them to bring the sport back.

I'd trade men's soccer for men's lacrosse heads up right now. Lets get a sport that will actually do something for the school.

The Coogs have great men's track, super-regional baseball, a better football team than we have and a pretty competitive basketball team...wtf SMU

I agree. Baseball is much more marketable as a college sport in the US than soccer.

First comes Football with a large enough TV draw to pay at least your own way. Another way of saying it you will have to guarantee that you would not reduce the share of Conference Revenue currently being enjoyed by the other conference members. This year the Big12 divided out 23 million to the original 8 members. TCU and UWV each got $14 million and their shares will gradually increase over the next three years when projected per school shares reach $40 million. If you joined the Big 12 your programs must increase the value of the Conference TV contract by at least 23 million. Same goes for the PAC 12, SEC, ACC, or the BIG Conferences. I am not saying SMU cant do that. I am just saying that is the first thing one of the Major 5 Conferences would look at. Other than Basketball the other sports are not important.

BTW, Wisconsin doesn't have it. Neither does Iowa State.
Colorado does not have one either

I'm biased, I played it, so I'm a college baseball fan. More a college fan then pro ... probably more a college fan then pro any sport. The CWS is a neat experience if you have never been. Syracuse University does not field a baseball team either (unless they fired one up for the ACC). Lived in Syracuse for a few years and became a big Cuse Lacrosse fan.
