Do only two of the current committments have offers from schools that are part of the power conferences?
Yeah it's 2 out of 8 (Proche and McCrary).

Re: June's Come to Jesus moment
Someone who I talked with and trust believes that Kearns is father (a coach) is a little prickly when it comes to this recruiting thing and may have driven off some schools. I'm not saying that's the sole reason the offers didn't come. But that appears to be a factor. Last edited by B1GPonyFan on Fri Jun 06, 2014 1:19 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: June's Come to Jesus momentI would think his come to Jesus moment would have been after nearly getting killed on a freeway in Oahu. The problem as I see it and it hits a lot of coaches when they get to that age is complacency. And if you get your friends around you coaching with you who are that age then it is even worse. It is not so much do or die anymore when you are 55-60. That is why you got to hire the young assistant coaches who are still stupid in life and have life's priorities screwed up but are dedicated to winning and think their job is on the line if they don't recruit and outwork everyone and they pass on that same urgency to the players. Contribute or we will take your scholarship away or as Hayden used to tell his players," we'll give you a road map and an apple......"
Re: June's Come to Jesus momentI have been among June's critics, especially in the area of recruiting. If it has changed than great. I would still have big fear that once the pressure is off it is back to the golf course, but if June has found the mix after all this time finally than I would say we are on track and he might even stay.
All we need to do is get a power package for short yardage, keep recruiting at an intense level, permanently ditch the walk of shame, go buy a blue SMU shirt and put the team in some to match, go hire three young turk eat nails recruiters and quit golf. If he does all of that I will be there at the statue dedication.

Re: June's Come to Jesus momentI talked with a former Pony, who is playing in the League, and he said he loveddddddddddd JJ (as a coach, offensive mind, mentor, etc.), but acknowledged he did not recruit.
I hope he has changed and brings in high quality recruits after the heat on his hot seat goes down. For now, I am going to enjoy the ride and give JJ and staff credit for getting kids to commit. Keep up the momentum. "smupony94: Harry, you have been promoted to purveyor of official status capabilities."
Re: June's Come to Jesus momentIn all honestly, not many head coaches recruit. What they do, however, is outline a strategy and hire assistants that will relentlessly work to execute that strategy. That is where June has failed in the last several years. When this thing was going good with Klemm and, to a lesser degree, Reinbold, we were consistently in the mix for kids that had multiple offers. In the post-Klemm world we seem to have reverted back to the antiquated methodology of looking at tapes sent in by June's old NFL cronies trying to land their kid a scholarship and June's weird network of college/NFL connections. That is not a way to build a competitive roster. Maybe, just maybe, the hiring of Broussard and Jason Phillips has created a little traction on the trail. If we are going to criticize June for putting us in this pickle, then we need to give him credit for making some good hires and at the very least attempting to right the ship.

Re: June's Come to Jesus momentI'm too much of a cynic to believ that the recent recruiting success is indicative of JJ having a change of heart.
Rather, I think he and his staff are trying to put themselves in the best position possible for the next job. A corollary is the baseball player in the last year of his contract having a career year. The current team is fed up with him but his agent can show the market the great last year stats. The narrative is " JJ had the x ranked class when he was fired. He was able to recruit despite the obvious lack of support from SMU. He took a dead program and made them relevant." There is a team that will bite and JJ can keep getting his 2 million salary. But if he leaves with a crappy class and goes 3-9 then that isn't something his agent can sell. Pony 81
Re: June's Come to Jesus momentI can't think of a program in America that would hire June if we fired him. Unless he's going to San Jose State or something

Re: June's Come to Jesus momentWhether by hook or by crook I don't honestly care what the motivation is. All I care about is results. If we were consistently in the Top 25 and knocking off our traditional rivals and winning conference titles I'd have no beef whatsoever with the recruiting strategy, extra geldings, sideline attire, etc. I just want to win. I'm tired of mediocrity and the success of the basketball program has given even greater ammunition to the thought that if we have the right people in place we can be really damn good here. The evidence is clear that June and the staff are at least trying to put SMU in the best position possible for this upcoming season and with recruiting. I don't care what motivates him whether its God, money, desperation, fear, etc. Just get it done.

Re: June's Come to Jesus moment
No P5 job would touch him but he could have his pick of lower-level G5 jobs as long as he's willing to work for what little they can pay him (low to mid six figures). Really depends on how much he still wants to work after leaving here. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

It's getting ridiculous. We're averaging over a commit a day since June (the month) began 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
