The perception on the outside is that June is the guru who brought SMU back from obscurity. As an example, the announcers on the UNT broadcast were still repeating that same worn out line at the beginning of the game.

Personally, I think June's honeymoon with the university admin was over. He wasn't getting the concessions he felt he needed – like those he was able to drive at the beginning of his tenure here. I don't necessarily believe June was being a chicken [deleted]. I think he looked around, took stock of the situation and wanted to salvage his reputation, so he bailed. Any way you look at it, a break needed to be made, and from my perspective this was the cleanest possible break scenario.

If he simply wanted to save his rep quitting on his players after game 2 and claiming he has personal issues that require a break from football is absolutely a chicken [deleted] thing to do.

If he is actually sick and needs some sort of medical rehab thats one thing. But to abandon his players purely to try and avoid getting the [deleted] sandwich he made from getting on him speaks very lowly of his character.

I guess until otherwise informed, we take it at face value that there is a personal issue, as stated. Troubling thing is that thinking to the 'next coach' sequence, the 'issue' casts an even greater question in the minds of potential candidates. Hope there are folks in the vetting process that will clearly answer those questions from those potential candidates,

there is NO WAY he has something medical/personal as the main reason for this. does anyone actually buy that? it's a hell of a coincidence that this personal issue came up right after the most embarassing loss during his time here and a lot of outraged fans and upset AD.

they told him he could resign or get fired, guaranteed. it was mutually beneficial for him to retire. smu doesn't look like the bad guy and he looks like he got out on his terms.

next step is for the rest of this lazy [deleted] staff to get removed. I realize that will come with the next coach, but Phillips and the rest of these bums who haven't done a GD thing on the recruiting trail need to get on the next bus out of town.

Come on man, Phillips has another 5 mini slot receivers already committed to our next class! He's recruiting HIS guys hard.

A quick look at the roster suggests we currently have 12 small/slot receivers with another 5 already committed. 2 will graduate, leaving 15!! Only 3 guys not in the 'mini' category: Hipps (graduating this year), Gaines & Musser (no idea?)

New coach will have his hands full with this Jones/Phillips created problem.

I foresee a lot of transfers for "personal reasons"

JJ lost recruits with the ASU fiasco and the program hasn't recovered since. Thank Leigh Steinberg for promoting his next big deal before it was final and leaving us to suffer for it. Not to get all psychological, but you could almost see the passion drain from JJ after that. Like he was stuck here with no where else to go. I hope he finds his mojo for his sake.

He resigned because it was his best option. "Personal reasons" is a PR phrase.

I'll support the next staff when they get a clean slate. This staff has proven what they are all about.

Hope the kids succeed, but don't see the majority of them contributing when the next staff rebuilds.
