Ponymon wrote:It might have helped if the press (Cowlishaw) had actually paid attention to what was going on at SMU and hammered Jones' and his staff for their lousy recruiting when it was obvious that he had checked out a couple of year's ago. We didn't just get into this mess overnight and the press is just as accountable in my mind as the SMU administration (Orsini) is that saddled the school with a lousy follow-up contract that apparently did not have any penalties for nonperformance.
If you are the DMN, what is your motivation to cover SMU with even an ounce of intensity or motivation? The fanbase is practically non-existent now. The university response to the death penalty (15+ years of being an ostrich with their head in a hole) made it worse. Former players were embarrassed to see the team play, and were treated as persona-non-grata by the school for a long period of time. Then someone with money practically forces Turner to build a stadium and makes him realize that to be a big school in Texas....well....you have to have a football team. We get JJ, who grows into the role only to tank it in all aspects of the job. From recruiting, to engaging the media, the offensive genius turns into a carpetbagger, stealing money and running. So after several decades of either completely ignoring the football program or having a HC who doesn't talk to the media, in a football mad town, we are shocked that the DMN hasn't really covered SMU enough to ask the semi-hard questions? As we say in the military..."really....report and explain your sorry [deleted]."

Wasn't it just last year the DMN MEDIA was telling us how lucky we were to have JJ? LOL!!!
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

SMU is not in this "they wont get into a P5" spot right now. We have 5 years to make an impact. And it's all about ratings and fan support.

We'll be ok. Sometimes hitting rock bottom hard is what you have to do to grow.

About time someone from the media grew a pair a began to write the truth.
There is so much more to tell. So much more.
BOONDOGGLE. FRAUD. USED-CAR SALESMAN.
I know how he managed to get us into this mess? He's lazy. Didn't recruit. Didn't adapt. Didn't innovate.
Welcome back to 1989.

The truth is that June was only doing half his job from Day 1 but he had guys like Klemm and Reinbold to cover for him on the Recruiting side. It apparently has become the conventional wisdom that June checked out after the ASU debacle. No that's not it. If you believe that then you don't understand the problem or college football. June hired the wrong staff for the wrong job from Day 1 and it should have been abundantly clear very early in his tenure.

Just to add to that Stallion, Klemm and JR used social media to their advantage to build up the momentum around the program. By not replacing his active, foot on the ground assistants properly and squelching the use of social media, he essentially killed both sales and marketing.

I know you noted how few of his coaches had any type of Texas connections.

Agreed. Wrong staff, all buddies with no Texas ties. Yes, you were correct. Pat on your back.

Agreed and wonder if Orsini had any conversations with JJ prior to the hire which raised this enormous red flag. Orsini - tell me your staff JJ - bunch of old buddies of mine Orsini - who recruits Texas (as in plural) JJ - maybe Reinbold (as in singular) Orsini - Texas is fertile, need heavy emphasis JJ - let's do it my way instead, I'm a genius Orsini (to himself) - I'm about to make this [deleted] one of the Top 10 highest paid coaches & he doesn't have a serious plan to recruit Texas!!! Hilltop we have a problem.

June's PR machine is now a dumpster fire - truth is hard to refute.

I remember being pretty fired up about getting McMackin, and then he got the HC gig at Hawaii. Didn't work out too well for either school.
