I know how to interpret Ponyte.

He is an M.D. therefore nothing he writes may be legible. I forgot for a moment.

I have received a very personal and thorough response form Coach Mason. He has invited me to come back to campus and address the team.

This wasn't a canned response and I am very impressed with how quick he responded and that he is willing to accept me into his teams' environment.

I have to say, it reminds me of a Ron Meyer letter or two.

I will update as now I have to figure out travel plans and so forth.

Answering the bell as you have is something that hopefully the current players can learn from. I would hope former players can as well.

Does that mean it came with a check or cash?

Hopefully you spend only 45 minutes on the Pitch story.

Meyer wrote one of my letters of recommendation for med school. It is the reason I got in. It was on Patriots' letterhead and was incredibly detailed and personal. I learned that the committee was so impressed by his letter that I was accepted in short order.

For all Meyer's set backs, taking care of his players even after football was not one of them.

Mason's email reminded me of Ron's letters. No cash or check but something far more valuable in them.

Wow, badass! All this time I've seen you post here and I never once realized you played during that era. Kudos!

Back in the days of Hayden Fry and Ron Meyer I sometimes "helped" in recruiting in Arkansas. Each would immediately return my phone call if not immediately available and always responded warmly to my letters. They were class acts who never forgot the SMU loyal supporters. That ended after Meyer left. The coaches couldn't have cared less. And trying to engage JJ in. Conversation was like pulling teeth!

Not to completely derail the conversation, but I think JJ is a classic introvert, personality wise. I don't mean that as good or bad. Casual conversations seem very, very hard for him. Interviews were not easy either, which is why he always looked so disinterested and staring off to the horizon.

I sent Fry a congratulatory letter when he took Iowa to the Rose Bowl. People actually wrote letters in those days. Not only did he reply but he sent a lengthy reply recalling things that were beyond my first recall.

Ask him about the time he blocked for Craig James on a pitch play TD.

I heard he was planning on writing a book called 'The Pony Pitch'. :P
