Mex speaks too much truth for this board. It’s funny to me how no one believes him as we finish our 33rd(?) straight year of not being ranked or having more than 8 wins.

Wow! So by doing the same things over and over again our basketball program magically became a perennially Top 40 program. That is impressive!

Mex makes interesting points and SMU has seen its share of administrative failures. Copeland was a disaster, Pye certainly hamstrung us with ridiculous recruiting restictions, SMU BOD didn't see the link between a successful FB program and student recruitment, so many missed opportunities.....
But:
Our inability to "bounce back" like Penn State, OSU, and others is solely linked to no longer being in a P5 conference. If we had the money and prestige of playing a P5 schedule we could again be relevent ... not a power .... but at least relevant.

Mex knows this. He also knows that JJ tried to leave for ASU, when he was publically humiliated by ASU he realized he was no longer a "top" coach and he quit. June quit on the team and his coaches. If this was simply a failure of administration then June might be working today in CFB. But he's not. Why.... everybody knows he quit and left THE WORST TEAM IN CFB HISTORY in his wake.

Turner isn't perfect but on his watch we have:
1. The highest paid G5 FB coach
2. First class G5 FB and BB facilities
3. Top 30 BB program
4. Top Golf team and facilities
5. Top tennis facilities

So, I'm not going to buy into the June is a victim narrative. I'm also not buying into Chad is a victim.... Chad came because he got a 1.5MM raise, got all the staff support he asked for (social media, recruiting support), and a platform to get the P5 job he coveted. I think Arkansas is actually a pretty good SEC job. Better than Kentucky, SC, Vandy, MSUand Ole Miss... not the worst by any stretch.
SMU has been a clown show in many ways but June and Chad are not victims.

Mex has some good points and some probably accurate inside information, but he loses me when he says that Chad last January "tried to resign." To imagine that Chad "tried to resign" this high paying job without any place to go, and no prospects for another coaching job, is so ridiculous that Mex has his credibility damaged. Sorry Mex, can't believe that fantastic claim.

If Mex is really an insider he is part of the failure because he has not done anything to move the needle aside from make the same claims on this message board year after year.

The Idiot Regurgitations of a Lunatic

I've spent hours proving he spouts crap about topics he doesn't understand especially NCAA academic standards and SMU admissions.

Bottom Line: SMU will get the athletic program that its alumni are willing to pay for--the everyday alumni have not proven that they have any interest in supporting the football program at sufficient levels over a 30 year period to justify our current AAC level. The big financial supporters on the football side have not proven they are willing to pay for anything better than a mid-tier AAC program. I have absolutely no complaints about the financial support for the Basketball side as they probably poured 80-100 Million into Moody, Crum, Coaching and Staff support. Mex is one of those guys that thinks that SMU should be magically funding the football program with operating revenue, deficit spending and endowment--that's utter nonsense. If SMU's alumni, family or friends don't support the program by attendance and donations -IT WILL NOT GET DONE PERIOD. See Ford, Moody, Crum, Indoor Practice Facility, Natatorium, Tennis Facility, Golf Facility. Just like every other private school those facilities need to be privately funded.

It would be nice if 'someone' in the administration read Mex's post, which is excellent inside info. I'm old enough to read between his lines, like most of you, that this can't be anything else but truthful. Good summary - Mex! One or two individuals saying something is one thing but when you have a long secession of coaches & administrators saying the same thing - you've got a real problem!

But nothing will ever change until Turner leaves - as well all know now. On the other hand, unless the SMU board recognizes that these issues & problems are created by them & Turner, we'll be getting another 'Turner-like' president & SMU athletics will eventually morph into D-II or III status.

Just the fact that the board agrees with what he's doing with his $800,000-plus salary & gave him an extension, I really don't hold out for any great changes once he does retire. Most of us will find other teams to support in or outside of SMU football, which many of us already have.

By the way, when does he retire again?

As long as June doesn't have to get off his [deleted] to recruit he will be able to get a lower tier pro job. No big surprise there.

I believe that there is a lot of truth in what Mex has to say. I have seen and heard of very similar issues in other parts of the university (outside of athletics). The budget model at SMU is a huge cluster. Not at all surprised that a new AD would have a hard time making sense of it. I heard the exact same about Chad desperately wanting out of Michigan game from reliable inside source.

Chad wanted out because he wanted to jump to next level immediately, and if this yr didn't work he would need some cheap wins. It was 100 pct self serving.

Good post, Navy. Mex has been right for a long time. Yes, Turner is now on board and gets athletics. Unfortunately, he missed on timing. We could have run the race when BU and TCU did and we would have had a much easier time gaining the needed momentum. After watching your peers lap you it’s hard to drum up enthusiasm as your fans have suffered another 10 or so years. While also being laughed at.
