I'd say his liberal recruiting of JUCO players and a weak middle/bottom of the Big 8 played a larger role in the turnaround.

All this thinking like the SMU teams of the past 25 years. We are heading to a new conference have better and better recruits stepping in with each succeeding class and are scheduled to play TCU, Baylor, Tech, aTm along with beatable other OOC teams.

Why are we wanting to dodge these guys. We should be thinking about playing those teams heads up and winning more then we lose. Challenge our players to play mid level competition which thsee are on average and win 75%. With that persription we will be going to bowl games not named Armed Forces, Indpendence, Hawaii etc.

We will be able to compete heads up for recruits with revenue coming in to properly fund the program.

LET'S STRIKE FEAR IN THE OOC TEAMS THAT HAVE TO PLAY SMU!

Now that we are BCS what are the filler games? UNT seems to be stuck on our schedule for years to come. An easy local seat filler would be great: rotation of UTEP, SFA, SHSU, UTSA, and TxState?

For us to become a perennial 10 win team that is consistently ranked and contending for BCS bids (the type of team that will make Dallas and the nation take notice) our recruiting has to step forward and our scheduling has to take a step in a more practical direction. I believe the first will occur but I have no idea about the second though I do know it needs to happen if we want to succeed in an AQ conference. I'm going to just have to trust Orsini to make sure our momentum doesn't stall.

I didn't say Snyder's scheduling was the primary reason for the turnaround (you're definitely right about him loading up on JUCOs and benefiting from a palatable Big 8 ) but it definitely played a factor in getting that program established.

Bowls don't care about a team's schedule, they care about how well that team's fans travel. Playing a bunch of AQ teams OOC is not going to get us in any better bowls, our only way into a high-profile (read BCS) bowl game is to win the Big East, we're never going to be an attractive at-large candidate so playing a souped-up OOC slate (that doesn't count towards getting an AQ bid) is pointless. Racking up big win totals will allow us to compete with anyone for recruits and it'll bring in revenue.

You need easy wins to recover from hard games. Look at #1 LSU do you know who they play after Alabama? Did they go out an schedule OU or Nebraska? Nope, they scheduled WKU. After their season opener vs UO they played Northwestern State. Id rather see SMU schedule easy OOC games so rack up wins and give the players a chance to recover. We don't need to win amazing games OOC in the Big East, if you win the Big East you get to go to a BCS bowl.

Football season is a grind, and players need all the chances they can get to recover. We only need to win the Big East to get to a BCS Bowl. Don't have to invite every top team to Ford or run our players ragged running around the country every week.

with Big East travel demands, I would expect SMU to schedule some regional games that we can hopefully win; I see no reason to drop the UNT series and of course, we will have TCU...but probably will see Rice, Tulane and Tulsa on future schedules. With more and more Califonia kids on the roster, we may see games against PAC 10 or MWC schools in future years...and there is always Hawaii

Schedule San Jose St or UNLV for the west coast game.

Good point. You wouldn't see TCU loading up with AQ teams on their OOC.

If we are to take the next step in being a legitimate top 25 program we have to win big OOC games like TCU has done over the last decade. Our schedule has no opponenet we can't compete against over the next 5 years as our young recruits mature and we benefit from AQ conference affiliation and the dollars that go with it.

SMU fans need to think of our team as one of the team's people circle on their calendar each year because we've earned a reputation as a top program. We are working our way in that direction but as the aTm game showed, we aren't there yet. I remain hopeful we will schedule fomrer SWC rivals consistently going forward. They will bring fans to Ford and shouldn't be beyond our level of competitin going forward.

I wonder if Boise will continue their "We will play anyone anywhere anytime" attitude now that they are in an AQ league.

I would highly doubt it. With travel cost of the Big East and the fact that they are now an AQ there is no reason. Also the Big East gives them greater exposure as opposed to the MWC or WAC. They only need to win the Big East to go BCS bowling, no reason to run your players ragged flying all of the country more than you have to.

Their OOC schedule is fairly open. I would imagine they go back to playing Idaho their instate rival, since it would fill stands and is only a bus ride away. They are scheduled to play BYU from 2012-2023. Pac12 Schools may also be appealing, for recruiting purposes and timezone. Games fans can drive to may also be a priority for OOC since the Big East is so spread out.

One Stretch, One Even, One less challenging was the strategy in the past. Based on going .500 in conference, you can get to a nice bowl game with a 2-1 OOC record. The OOC goes to 4 games in BE so you go one stretch, one even, and two less challenging to go either 2-2 or 3-1.

Curious, and it might have been mentioned earlier, but how will this change if the BE actually happens.
