The SMU Mustang BLog is right about Coach Price being a miracle worker at UTEP ....

Of course, many of us (myself included) said the same thing about Coach Kragthorpe at Tulsa, who had a monster debut season the year before, before jumping the tracks last year. Interesting how coaches' ability changes when the talent leaves. (I still think Coach Krag is a very good coach -- he just had nothing to work with last year. And much of what was there left.)

Yeah, but Price has a better pedigree than Kragthorpe and his 2005 schedule is easier than the 2004 schedule was. And as Stallion mentioned, they have a lot of Div 1A transfers that are now eligible. Of course, Tulsa beat UTEP last year, so what do I know?

Under Schumann SMU had one top 20 defense (1998 I believe and another year a top 30 defense). Have you noticed the last couple of years how we have gotten torched on big plays on defense, that rarely happened w/ Schumann. And under Schumann we defended the option really well, I still don't think our current staff has figured out Rice's option attack. In the late 90's the problem was always our anemic offense and not scoring enough points or moving the football, it was hard to point the finger at our defense; the last couple of years its both our offense and defense.

You can also point a finger at special teams while you are at it.

When you are giving up 25+ points a game in 2000 and 2001, I have a hard time saying, "great defense."
