The Ticket should be contacted yesterday about doing a remote for the Halloween game. They could make that a huge event.
6 p.m. coverage of Orsini's hire by local media:
Ch. 5 - anchor reads :15 narrative about the hire with an SMU Mustang graphic behind him saying SMU Hires A.D.; 3rd story in after video pieces on the U.T. v WVA basketball game and Mavs loss to Golden State last night. Ch. 4 - no coverage Ch. 8 - 3rd story following pieces on UT v WVA game and Tiger Wood's game today...no video...just another :15 anchor narrative. No graphic. Ch. 11 - no coverage because of the NCAA Basketball Tournament pre-empting newscast Welcome to the Dallas media's attitude towards S.M.U., Mr. Orsini.
Guys Night out at the SMU Game on Halloween! Remember that the Ticket is a business and that they sell airtime to get your message out there. They are the market leader in this area that is our most likely ticket buying audience. If we want the pub and attention then we have to pay. Coaches and the AD calling in on a regular basis to shows costs nothing. As for the local compettion, TCU pays ESPN to broadcast their games and the pregame show. SMU does not pay for a pregame show. I can't imagine why TCU has more money than we do, but the only way to get air time is to buy it. Think of it is a big SMU Football infomecrcial. I also wish that SMU would "pony" up the money to carry all of our games on a local TV station as well. Can't imagine why we can't do that and advertise the law school and MBA programs entensively during those broadcasts. If the guys that sell triple edge wiper blades can buy blocks of time, then SMU Athletics can do the same. Class of '91
Wow. In CORPUS CHRISTI it warrented a reading of the AP release, at length, with some silent clips of the press conference as video. http://www.kristv.com/Global/story.asp?S=4677492
The bias here against SMU IS truly amazing. It's not just whining on our part. Never has been.
Too many SMU folks are just too happy to accept it, however. Check out this board: 'Oh, that's just the way it is.' 'Who are we anyway?' 'This all we really deserve.' 'Let's not make the media mad at us.' 'After all, we WERE cheating.' 'We've got to win a championship before we should look for any attention.' We are Dallas' one and only Div. 1A program. Orsini's hire should have been at the top of page 1 of the sports page today. Instead there was more UT praise and adoration. And more of the same in today's lead editorial. This is NOT UT's town. This greatly detracts from our recruiting and has for some time. Speak up, back the Mustangs, and make some noise. Now where is my triple espresso?
You know what else that is obvious that TCU pays for? They must pay ESPN 103.3 not to mention SMU ever. They had nothing about Orsini on the Ms. Kelly breaks I heard yesterday. We're so naive sometimes I do agree with Stallion about that, TCU is looking for any edge it can get in the media.
Here ya go - that is crazy ESPN had no mention of the AD hire -

On Thursday morning, I wrote that I didn't expect any news until Monday. First, it shows how wrong I was. Second, it shows how badly SMU plays the media. A press conference on a Friday is stupid to begin with. A press conference on a Friday during the sweet 16 is even dumber. SMU could have held the press event on Monday and had only a Mavs game or Stars game to compete with. PR people have a rule, you only schedule a press conference on Friday if you are announcing bad news. Why? What is the least read paper of the week? Saturday's. What is the least watched newscast of the week? Friday's. Did it deserve coverage? Yes, but SMU could have planned this better.
The Green Goblin will be there! ![]()
Blog you are right about the Friday timing-but on the other hand if they really felt he was the guy for the job then perhaps its best to dot the I's and cross the T's as soon as possible. Otherwise, when word gets out you might face a bidding war or the candidate might reconsider just like McCartney did in 1989. In the long run I say sign him up-there's plenty of time for the message to get out.
This is what I ws thinking. I do not care who knows right now. I want everyone to know who he is a year from now. And on one of the other subjects, as far as having the ability to hire, that, of course is a very important asset, but I hope we do not have to find out his ability soon. If we have to undergo another coaching change in the near future in either revenue sport, I am worried we will even lose our die hards. If Bennett or Tubbs leave I want them to be snatched up by a big time program, not dismissed due to lack of performance. Much easier to hire good when you are producing.
