I am shocked that his honor would entertain the thought of such devious action. On second thought, what better than a retired Arkansas judge to run the slush fund.

SMU's a private institution. Our money laundering schemes are our own business. Count me in.

Not devious, just a method to make some money. Of course the first thing to use the money for would be a luxury box that you could share. Then we can put the balance in the slush fund. With interest earned on the slush fund we can keep stocked in burgers and cheer.

It went pretty well. The turnout was about 50 people, but it was nice to see some young alumni in the crowd along with the aging but very dedicated fan base that sits right up front and have been supporting for the better part of a century.

Phil sounds very passionate and energized about this upcoming year, although he has the talent to sound genuine in everything he says. Doherty spoke mostly about the recruiting class, but he seemed a little off when he addressed the crowd. He's a very effective and interesting public speaker, but Tuesday night he just kind of seemed somewhere else. Rhompola is excited about the coming season, stating how SMU has the seniors to rely on with quality depth in the younger classes.

Orsini was great to listen to, he's a very fun and genuine person to talk to. It's fairly easy to recognize that this is not the old Athletic administration. Aside from all the grandstanding and chest thumping, we got to see how dismal our numbers in attendance are. We finish no higher than 11th out of 12th in everything except womens basketball, where we rank 7th with I think 693 fans a game.

It was fun to listen to them talk, the BBQ was good, and it was nice to get to talk them personally after the event. Phil skipped out early to hit the recruiting trail. All in all a good first event in Horned Frod territory. The administration came in by saying this is SMU's back yard. It was nice to hear.

I think the thread over on the bball board linking to Coach D's blog may shed some insight as to the kind of week Coach was having. Props to him for even being there.

Which none of us knew last Tuesday night. I was giving a recap, not criticizing him.

Did Orsini and his Top 25 staff get the presentation correct this time? In Dallas the 'Benchmark" section of the presentation had the numbers wrong. I know Orsini was embarrassed and I felt for him given that this was his first ERNEST talk with supporters.

Bottom line, we need more season tickets and people in seats. And we need to GROW the Cash Birdwell Endowment Fund.

I was actually surprised to see that UH, which is a public school with 20,000+ students and a much larger alumni base to do so poorly in both attendance and fundraising. While ours are absolutely hideous, I was still surprised.

This post is too late to remind the Austin folks and maybe too late for the San Antonio fans, but the tour is on its southern swing with San Antonio tonight and Houston tomorrow.
