he may not have enough experience to be head coach, but i'd like to know what happened to ramon flanigan. and why does the next hc have to have "strong nfl ties"? what does that mean? its nice if they have hall of fame recognition (singletary) but "strong nfl ties" doesn't mean as much to me as ncaa success.

Turner Gill, who began his coaching career at Southern Methodist University as receivers coach in 1991. http://www.ubathletics.buffalo.edu/foot ... gill.shtml
He's 3-1 in conference, by the way. Wins over Toledo, Temple, and Ohio. Loss to Ball State.

Interesting NY Times article about the Rooney Rule in College FB. Pony Up
3 Reasons To Consider Turner Gill:
1. Outstanding Recruiter-it would be kinda exciting to see what he could do recruiting the Metroplex-very very familiar with all the high schools coaches in Texas since he recruited Texas for Nebraska-considered one of the Top Recruiters in the Big 12 2. Former QB Coach then Coordinator for Nebraska I think he would mesh with Willis since they are similar types at the position when he was third in Heisman 3. I believe he would know how to use Martin in the I-Formation after spending time at Nebraska Biggest ? whose going to be his Defensive Coordinator and his assistants. Just like Dodge at NTSU-he's already proved he is a quality Offensive Head Coach-but he hired 4 high school coaches including the defensive coordinator and they are getting scorched. I don't think any of his defensive Coaches have recent experience at the Division 1A level. That wouldn't be acceptable unless you were reasonably sure that he had the connections to hire a quality staff.
I was shocked to see in a recent article that Barry Switzer named Turner Gill as perhaps the biggest recruit that he ever lost in recruiting. Thought it might be Eric Dickerson. Gill actually wasn't as visible a name in recruiting in Texas at the time but obviously he was perfect for the option offense run by OU and Nebraska
You got your fair share of recruits, but who is the recruit you really regret losing? "I had one I lost. I bought him a damn car and he went to Arkansas. It was my son. I wish he had come. "But I wish I handled Marcus Dupree better. That situation, I wish he wouldn't have had all those people tugging on him and hadn't had his ear." But wasn't that situation Marcus' fault? "It was both of us. I bumped up against it. I could have handled him differently and I regret that. "But Turner Gill, recruiting him, that really bugs me. That's one of the big tragedies. Not only did I lose him, but he goes to Nebraska. That was the only downturn I ever had was when I didn't have the quarterback I wanted. I get cracked up over what Donovan McNabb was bringing up, all this bull-crap. I said I was playing a black quarterback before he was ever born. He doesn't know what those guys (before) went through. He didn't have any idea what they went through, and he was griping about (his situation) in Philly. "But not getting Turner Gill, boy that was a disaster. See, that was the slump I had, '82, '83. Then Marcus came in here and ran off about three backs and then he leaves and then the cupboard is bare. Shoot, I had to start all over again. But I was fortunate enough to get Jamelle Holieway, recognizing his talents and abilities and getting him to come from L.A. and surrounded him with all the other players we got."
