How do you know Herbstreit wasn't right?

last time i checked Herbstriet wasnt a beat writer....think he is the first person to know these things? "There ain't nothing you can't solve with one more beer"
I guess he could have been, but that just proves how fickle these searches are...I hesitate to ever eliminate a candidate with all the disinformation that gets passed around. Just impossible for us to know.
He does have a beat. He concentrates on national college football for ESPN. I don't know how many of you saw this. But the day Herbstreit broke the story and then Miles hurridly called the press conference to say he was staying at LSU, ESPN did the smart thing and put Herbstreit back on the air. He defended his information saying he got it and felt good about but congratulated Miles for staying. I think there was no way Herbstreit and his bosses don't take that stuff to the air without feeling pretty good about where the information came from.
I think he would be a perfect fit, ecspecially considering the position we are in now.
The Ravens' swoon has made it easier for the team to cope with the possibility of losing offensive coordinator Rick Neuheisel, who is expected to be approached by colleges looking for a new head coach. "Rick Neuheisel has been, and will make, an outstanding college coach," Billick declared. "The college game needs coaches like Rick Neuheisel. ... I would be very surprised if a number of schools weren't interested in Rick Neuheisel, and we'll support that in every way." Billick said he that if Neuheisel gets a head coaching job, the Ravens would allow him to leave the team before the completion of the NFL season. ...and he is available now to start recruiting.
You're right there is a difference.
But General you still don't get it! Because if Kate had written that second story according to your reasoning, she'd be out of a job. Wrong again. Kate is not out of a job because she clearly shows the information is from an un-named source. I am not questioning that someone told her that, but being an un-named source makes it not as credible. You honestly think "a source with knowledge of the school's search" is just as credible as Coach Neuheisel saying himself he is interested? Those two statements are not on equal footing as far as being credible. Ask yourself if a paper like the DMN is going to actually print something that CANNOT be verified. They print stuff all the time that can not be verfied when it's from an un-named source. For example they print stories like "un-named sources say President Bush will ask for a tax cut in his State of the Union address". That can not be verified until after the speech. But I suppose General we will never agree. By the way General....are you in favor of SMU hiring Coach Neuheisel? C-ya @ Milos!
i don't want exciting
you are the one that stated he is boring i want good, i don't think he is either so a winner of the Pac 10 Title, a winner of the Rose Bowl, a winner of the Cotton Bowl, head coach to 7 bowl games, coaches his team to a 3rd in the country final standings, and a current offensive coordinator for an NFL team is "not good"? if the new coach happens to be exciting so be it thats a nice bonus ... personally i would like to see either 1) Bowden or 2) Barnett named the new head coach ok.....they'd be good too! C-ya @ Milos!
Fair enough, IPP. My favorite has been Glen Mason. And there was some wilda$$ report out there that said he had a second interview with us. I can't even remember where that came from.
I think they are starting to get a litt' desperate-but hey I can live with the guy although I have the same reservations as Dwan. But once again where's the proof he's even under consideration. Logic tells me probably not. I'm waiting for Dwan to throw his support to Gary Gibbs.
He is such a good judge of talent that as the QB coach of the Ravens he supported cutting Derek Anderson and keeping Kyle Boller.
This in addition to the low talent levels he left CU and UW I'd take him over Gibbs though.....at least we would get some good press.
Of the "baggage candidates" give me Barnett every day and twice on Sunday. But Stallion's right, there is no evidence they are candidates. In fact there is no evidence ANYONE is a candidate....
There is a lot more to a player being cut than his position coach's evaluation of the player. Tony Romo would have been cut by the Cowboys, had it not been for Quincy Carter being thrown off the team heading into the '04 season - now they look like geniuses.
Most of the time it is a matter of $, and how much has been invested on a player, (i.e. 1st round draft picks and lucrative free agents). See Kyle Boller and Steve McNair. With nothing invested in a player like Anderson, and the limited reps he gets in practice at 3rd string, it is difficult to fairly evaluate his talent. It's ridiculous to question a coach's credibility who has the D1 success that Neuheisel has had because of one personnel decision. Oh, and two years after Rick left Colorado HIS players went to the Fiesta bowl under Barnett....He also had top 25 recruiting classes his last two years at UW...what team was left in shambles??
I don't think he was going to be kept on at CU. I can see if my dad knows any real info about that. I do know that there were not too many Colorado fans that were upset to see him go. (Wikipedia is not an accurate news source--think Neuheisal's staff or the sports marketing firm working for him had any influence in the editing of that page?)
RN had a lot more than one problematic personnel decision: Two just off the top of my head would be the ineligible player that he fielded forcing CU to forfeit an entire season and the girl that he put on the team which ultimately led to the demise of the Colorado football program and Gary Barnett (after GB's comments brought the media to town and then she claimed she was assaulted by the players.)
The same players he coached to only 8-4 the year before or 5-6 the season before (which all had to be forfeited in the end)? Not saying I wouldn't take the man as our coach. I think any of the three deposed coaches we keep discussing would be great, far better than most of the other options we have been discussing at this point, and I hope we hire one of them. I would just take Barnett over RN for the following reasons: 1) GB has coached and won at a school with a difficult recruiting situation. RN has only coached at two of the strongest programs in the country. 2) RN has had actual trouble with the NCAA at both schools and was ultimately fired from one of them (whether rightly or wrongly) for that. GB was cleared by the NCAA and the school, but was fired after a failed season amidst the media firestorm. 3) GB took over RN's players and took them to far greater success. Still, my plea to SO, RGT, and the powers that be in this search--HIRE ONE OF THESE TWO GUYS OR BOWDEN AND DO IT NOW!!!!!!
