I still think Turner has something to do with the length of this search and why someone like Fran is a backup instead of signed 5 weeks ago.

Covered this weeks ago. Dr. Turner piped up at the outset of the search something to the effect that there were two stacks of potential candidates (I think by "stack", he meant resumes/vitaes), those without controversial issues in their past, and those with, and that SMU would prefer one from the first stack over the second. He liked Paul Johnson, ostensibly IMHO because he wouldn't have to work real hard at selling a coach like PJ to any constituency. How do you realistically [deleted] and moan about a former Navy coach who beat Notre Dame and took his team consistently to bowls (not to mention beat SMU's coach at that time)? I mean, the guy wins and he is at a service academy, arguably an institution educating some of the finest young men and women in the United States.

He and the Board of Trustees will only inch ever so slowly away from the model that preserves that university's academic mission and integrity the most. They will move the bar a little, but don't think for a minute that they like moving the bar at all. It's a matter of slowly boiling the frog by putting it in a pot of lukewarm room-temp water and turning up the fire slowly such that the frog cooks without becoming quickly uncomfortable and hopping out. They will slowly do enough to win, but not enough to endanger the established mission of SMU.... It just sux for us.

Maybe - he probably has a child (or two) with a first cousin.

If Jones wanted this job, he would have taken it immediatley. It was already obvious to him Hawaii couldn't come close to matching the money, so he and his agent are obviously looking for a better deal.

Faced with the prospect of Jones "big-timin" us which is very likely, we will be hard pressed to sign any of the other coaches that were in the mix. SMU looks like damaged goods/coaching death trap and I don't see how Fran, Coker, Bower, or any other coach would take the job if offered after how this process has gone.

Steve would be wise to have contacted a lower tier coach that has not been thrown in the mix at this point so we can move quickly should this thing fall apart.

I hope we get Jones and he is worth all the time and recruiting effort that has been flushed down the toilet. Orsini has been a real disappointment so far. I hope his "all-in" on June is worth it.

RA Stock Tip: Slowly enter the market (if you have been in cash like I have over the past several months) should we see another dip here and go below 13K. Buy SPY (S&P Tracking Index) b/c you can't outperform the market.

Rich Alum - shouldn't you be in a hedge fund and not trading etfs?"

great comment/question......too much exposure to the credit markets has changed my philosophy.

I am done with the glamour......its back to ETF's and Red River.

RA - Try emerging market funds - ETF's and Mutuals. Low expenses on ETF's and certain mutuals with the big boys (Fidelity has a stable of low exp funds, along with Vangard, etc.).

'Red River - I'm not sure you're playin' with the big boys, hoss.
