I agree with your point in principle, but the converse of that letter is also true--that it might be honored. The mistake here is that nobody placed a follow-up call to let him know it would not be honored. Of course that can't happen until the new coach gets hired, etc. Having said all that, I stand by my unofficial ponyfans position as it relates to his coach's hissy fit.
That is the one part of the whole thing that makes little sense to me. Hard to believe they weren't going to let him know it wasn't going to be honored. That is the part of the story that I would like to hear.

Me too. I think its just a timing issue that played out badly for everyone involved in this.

Better than revoking his scholarship as he was moving into his dorm.

Another excellent point. Somebody dropped the ball on this, but I'm hoping that this is just of a few small missteps that occur during the transition. Like they said, it's not a seamless process, just I hope they're just working out a few smal kinks right now.

Shrerrington said that letters went out in November to all potentials telling them of the situation--"that the new coach had the right to refuse all committments."
That should put one on notice that you better have a plan B, C, and D in place if if plan A (attending SMU) didn't pan out.
An article in DMN said that Jones started his job in town on Tuesday, January 15. He was in Houston on the 16th (I think) for the Coach of the Year awards presentation.
Sherrington said Dews was told "last week" that Dews won't be part of JJ's recruiting class. That means sometime between Sunday, January 13 through Saturday, January 19.
Seems to me that JJ (and those responsible) contacted Dews as soon as practicable (or if Dews' father called after the JJ announcement, he was similarly told as soon as practicable).
Does the timing stink? Sure it does. I don't think anyone was pleased that our search took 71 days to complete. But that doesn't make SMU the bad guy in this situation.

This is a really strong point. He started on January 15th and the awards ceremony was on the 17th. Wonder what day Dews called?

Does anybody know if he winded up signing anywhere? I checked rivals and it didn't say anything. Poor kid. That's what you get when you put all your eggs in one basket.

Maybe for the same reason that an airport in Oklahoma is named after Will Rogers, a guy that died in a plane crash.

I have always thought you were a pretty funny guy when I read your posts over the last year...but you clearly are COMPLETELY ignorant if you are going to refer that man in those terms. I am not going to get in to a long winded sermon defending Robert E. Lee (which in no way would revolve around his involvement in the Confederacy) because it would clearly be pointless...my advice to you is, read a book.
Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

If any of you think I'm serious, then you're wound way too tight. Just gigging you southerners. I'm aware of what he did. Relax. Geez.
