As a public service, I emailed Kate this morning to try and stoke the fire. She says SMU/Orsini gave DMN the same release they gave the Ft Wayne paper (Orsini's 'please call me' announcement), and that they refused to comment further.
More bad news is that Kate is on Olympic duty until well into August. That means we have no beat writer, so we are at the mercy of the Colleges editor as to whether we get coverage.
Folks, the AD from lil' ol' SMU is a top candidate for the job at one of the most storied programs in the land. And the coverage in the hometown paper is a 3-day old blurb originally released to the Fort Wayne Herald-Democrat-Telegram-Picayune, or whatever it is.

South Bend Tribune basically endorsing Orsini. (see front page of ponyfans) We are screwed guys. At least we have the right people running the board of trustees to make sure we find a good replacement.

Orsini is probably gone... They are looking for someone that is a good negotiator(for the TV deal) who can also raise money. Those are Orsini's strongest skills. The fact that he attended and played football at ND pretty much seals the deal. At least he put the infrastructure in place for us to flourish before his departure.

Please please please hire a good replacement. This program cannot endure another Copeland. I hate to start guessing about possible replacements, but who comes to mind?
Back off Warchild seriously.

Why must the sky always be falling at SMU? Can't we have one full year of happiness?

I had one in 1970.

I could sign on as Co-AD and it would double the experience level.

Orsini has left us in good shape. He has hired coaches that should be with us for a few years to come. HE has increased our exposure and if we win we will attract even more exposure. He has upgraded facilities. We have numerous TV appearances this fall. With luck, we will not need the same turnaround guy that Orsini has been.
Also, I believe he was instrumental in getting a fair and equal playing field when it comes to recruiting.
Best of luck Steve and thanks for putting us on the right track.
Now with Orsini gone, what are we going to talk about till August?

Two times zero is still zero. (for those who don't get your point)

And that was my point. I like James but a big smile and oozing charm, while a plus for the position, are certeinly not the main assets needed to run a successful University program. Should Orsini go, and if he did I would heartily thank him and wish him well, we would need to follow up with a solid experienced AD.

We will be fine. I personally don't believe ND is in a rush. You occasioanlly read that the search may take over a year. They might be in a rush, but they are not in a rush because of competition for candidates as if this was a coaching search. I am still not sure the powers that be over there will want Steve. Steve has a particular skill set, is that a skill set Notre Dame particularly needs?
If Steve goes, we will be fine. This is a better job than when Steve got here. We all know it. And if we have learned anything since Copeland quit, we have learned that there will be more interest in an SMU athletics position than we expect.
Hire Rick Hartzell.
