We told my brother-in-law to be at our wedding 2 hours before we actually needed him to be there for pictures. Just like movie times say they start @ 7:25 but that's just when the ads, concessions and previews start. 20 minutes later...MOVIE!
Done and done: pre-game stuff starts at game time, fans actually get there for kickoff when they think it's middle of first quarter.
IF that doesn't work, try this...start at Dallas Hall and push everyone to the stadium:

Go RED! Go BLUE! Go MUSTANGS! S-M-U!!

It looks kind of bad for me to, in a public forum, denounce something that the University's geniuses has made us do.
I would love to know what we do at games that the student don't already know about? Cheering? It's not like we speak in tongues and chant Satanic hymns in order to appease the football gods... Want us to make everybody wear their beanies in the fourth quarter? Well, put some horns in their hands and tell them to get their asses down to Summer camp and spend 2 weeks of their lives learning what we have to in order to put together a marching band. Maybe you should have them leave at halftime and change clothes. Oh wait, they would leave to go to the bar. The problem(s) you speak of have nothing to do with the Band. We cheer. We play. Want us to learn to play football too?
And you guys do realize that we don't actually get to control when we play, right? The geniuses running the game get to tell everyone (not just us) when to play and when not to. "No, guys, we need to play the Bob's Steak and Chophouse ad"
Get pissed. As fans we should be. But you can take your Mustang Band blame and shove it.

I guess the most important thing to remember here, before we all jump down this fellow's neck, is that this guy is not being paid. He apparently put lots of writing time and rehearsal time into making a song to get SMU fired up about June Jones, and he deserves thanks for that.
That said, the Mustang Band definitely should play our fight song when the team runs on the field. Maybe his song should have been on the BLVD or at halftime? We should all appreciate Kolb's efforts, but we need to put them in the proper place/time and play Peruna when we ought to be playing Peruna.

I like the SWAT team idea. Or maybe free beer vendors roaming the stands ten minutes before kickoff.
Another thought, how about getting fans to sing Pony Battle Cry before the game, leaving Varsity to post game? That way you might get non-alums to actually make some noise and it is a lot more upbeat.

I don't think anyone blamed the band. I think we would like to hear more of it. They are good and they should be allowed to play more. If someone in the marketing department is keeping them from doing so, they are taking away from the game experience that fans enjoy. The ads don't get the fans into the game and the announcer certainly doesn't either. But the band does.
They at least didn't play when they weren't supposed to, like the TX State band. It just seemed like the TX State Band was playing a lot more than our band. Maybe our band just followed the designated playing times and TX State's didn't.

smu diamond m-
I apologize if I inadvertently lay the blame at the feet of the band. That was not my intention. I think the band has great tradition and is often the only demonstration of true spirit at game. My impression, from past posts of others and conversations, was that it has been suggested that more of the band chants etc be incorporated into the general population. And most band reaction was, "That's our 'thing!'" I don't have any specific examples, but it just seems like things are going on over there that no one else knows about.
BTW, love the drum thing where everyone shuffles left or right and jumps, and desperately miss Peruna firing up after every offensive snap.
My point was more that the University, Athletic Department, Cheerleaders Pom Squad, PA coordinate with the Band. Follow their lead. Get EVERYONE, and I mean everyone on the same page.
Two Aggie analogies in one day and I'm about to be sick, but if there is not a school or fan base that needs <gulp> yell/cheering/noise/spirit practice, more than SMU's. Someone high-up needs to throw their hands up and just admit after 20 years of perpetual putridity that we need to freshen up. It was just sickening last night the complete lack of interest and excitement in our section. Now I'll have to admit, most people in our section probably saw Doak Walker play, but c'mon!
Go RED! Go BLUE! Go MUSTANGS! S-M-U!!

FYI: Update
As I am not sure who reads PF and who does not, I have forwarded an e-mail of this thread to SMU's Marketing Group while copying Steve Orsini, Brad Sutton, and Bobbi Roquemore.
Here's hoping this does not fall on deaf ears, and that this "issue" is a moot point once the TCU game rolls around.
Keep the comments coming.

While we're throwing ideas out there, how about in and out privileges. People might show up at the beginning of the game if they aren't trying to get a few more drinks in them because they can't during the game. Or adopt the same thing other top 25 schools do and allow mustang club members into a special area for adult beverages during the game. You can even get away with charging $7 a beer in those areas. I assume in the stadium club seats you are given this privilege, but make it available for the average donor/fan.

if alcohol in ford is your problem then invest in this:
http://www.thebeerbelly.com/
a buddy of mine brought his to the game. works magic especially if you stay the whole game

I like it. Fantastic idea! Why is it again that we can't serve alcohol in the stadium? By the very nature of purchasing a ticket for the game, doesn't that make it a "private club"? I'd gladly chip in an extra dollar per ticket if alcohol were available in the stadium. I think it really would help get people to make their way into the stadium.

FWGirl, it's against NCAA rules to sell it in the stadium itself. However, using UT as an example, Longhorn Foundation Donors are given passes to a restricted area, easily accesible from within the stadium where you can purchase beer and better food. It comes with a premium on the beverage prices but its worth it. You have to consume the drinks in that area, but they have big screen tvs set up with the game showing. Usually people do head there a little before half time and return to their seats.
I think it would be a great incentive for people to donate to the Mustang Club. It seems our marketing people are all over what the other top 25 schools are doing, why don't incorporate something the fans actually want.

I didn't realize the NCAA had banned it. But I definitely think it would be a great perk to Mustang Club membership. I hope someone takes this idea and runs with it!

I disagree with the contention that the NCAA bans it. Alcohol is sold at Tulane games. Which means it must not be a conference rule either. My guess is it's either university policy or city policy where the stadium is located.

They play at the SuperDome which is not an NCAA football stadium.
Edit-I was wrong about the cotton bowl example.
In Austin, at the Erwin Center, no alcohol at NCAA events, but for nonNCAA events, alcohol is ok.
