the professor screaming for SMU to get loud looks like they were filmed on a phone camera.

My favorite was when they played one of these bits asking SMU fans to make some noise, right after TCU scored a touchdown. That was a priceless moment, even better than the smokescreen that obscured the video board after they finally got the audio to work, midway through the presentation. Greatness. Absolute greatness.

At least we didn't set the lawn on fire this time.

I suspect that because our on-field product is so bad, that Orsini feels the need to make the game presentation more "enjoyable". That causes the silliness we're seeing now. When I see him at the Navy game, I'll mention to him to watch their game presentation. Honor, tradition and class are compatible with college football.

I guess that's the big point these people as missing. If we were interested in exposing our sensory organs to this festival for Attention Deficit / Disorder sufferers, then we'd be at Texas Stadium watching the Cowboys or AAC watching the Mavs. Tradition, spirit and (dare I say it) class should be hallmarks of a University such as SMU.

Also sad was the "offensive play of the first half" being a 10 yard pass completion around the 40 yard line, if we can't do better than that, don't show any at all.

Also, you know your team is in trouble if the halftime highlights lead with the band conductor running onto the field!

I'm afraid that the fact that we have a jumbotron is just too big a temptation to fill it up with commercials and other junk to resist. The commercials are of course another revenue stream that I guess we have to live with although, I would be willing to pay more for my ticket if it meant not having to listen to a plumbing commercial. The whole concept that a person cannot be satisfied just watching a game, but must have every second between plays being filled with some electronic/digital audio/video form of intertainment(?) is just mind numbing to me. We are being brought down to the lowest common denominator. We aren't being allowed to enjoy the band or spend some time discussing the game with people sitting around us...just constant noice and visual clutter being dumped on us. Just like in politics, change just for the sake of change isn't worth much.

I understand that we were probably required to show a certain number of State Farm ads during the game, but could they have shown more than one? I got so tired of hearing how "Moms Rule" after watching that ad 15 times. I don't think we're going to be able to get rid of all of the advertisements, but we need to just get the rest of the gameday experience down.
Would it be too much to ask for a little more coordination when they do Kiss Cam or Dance Cam? Maybe have the band play the songs. If not, let's get rid of those cliches. Would it also be asking a little too much for a "dress rehearsal?" Spend some time making sure that whoever is operating the jumbotron can get the sound and the video going at the same time for something other than a commercial.

Welcome to the world of Dallas sports! The scenario you have just presented is the reason that I refuse to buy a ticket to attend a Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys or Dallas Stars game. People in Dallas have had this crap thrust upon them in the professional venues (at least the TX Rangers haven't sunk this low...yet!) for awhile now and they think THIS IS HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE! It's the 'video generation'-mentality. LOTS OF BRIGHT LIGHTS, NOISE, SOUND EFFECTS, ETC. to get everyone into the atmosphere of the moment.

I agree with you, PK. It's mind-numbing to me, too.

I'll continue to attend SMU games at Ford, though. Maybe I'll just bring my iPod and listen to some symphonic music during the game instead.

How about just getting the PA guy to get the down and yardage right. There were multiple plays where he said things like '3rd and 3' when it was actually a first down.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to show video of professors trying to rev up the crowd must be the same Einstein who came up with Compliance Trivia.

You know, it wouldn't take a whole lot of effort to get some REAL celebrities with SMU ties to film spots for the Jumbotron. Next time they're in town, film a quick spot with Laura Bush, Eric Dickerson, Craig James, Don Meredith, etc. Heck, I bet Kathy Bates could give a great pep talk.

Short of that, you could get Dallas-area celebrities to film bits. News personalities, sports personalities, whatever. Grab people at the Athletic Forum luncheons and the Doak Walker Award festitivites.

In other words, get people that most of the crowd would recognize.

And yeah, the overall game presentation is amateur hour. I concede that we need a lot of whizz bang to appeal to a broader audience (like people who don't know who that professor is on the scoreboard) but there's a way to do it that looks professional and prepared. The football games are SMU's biggest open house to the community. Game presentation is something we have to get right.

We actually thought that the professor schtick was pretty clever. Could have been better executed, but it is an entertaining idea. I kept looking for a representative from the Spanish department.

I don't mind her on the screen. She's attractive and at least gives some correct information...but mainly she's attractive.

If he is doing his job, he should be reading this already. Can't imagine that you could effectively handle that responsibility without parsing through the post-game reaction. After all, every bit of that nonsense should be geared toward entertaining fans and bringing them back for the next game.
