My favorite look in all of football is white jerseys, white pants. Simple yet so cool. Hope Texas is wearing that in the National Championship game just like it when it won the whole thing against USC.

I think us wearing the all white had something to do with us beating Nevada.

I was actually a little worried about the white uniforms being bad luck. We wore white in the 1980 Holiday Bowl and blew a huge lead in epic fashion. Came back with blue jerseys for the 1983 Cotton Bowl and won. Wore white again in the 1983 Sun Bowl and got taken behind the shed by Alabama. Wore blue in Hawaii in 1984 and beat Notre Dame.

So yes, I was actually superstious about wearing white in the Hawaii Bowl based on a track record established 30 years ago. :) Glad we got that monkey off our back.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Thanks Navy. Actually, it must have been '77 when those blue jerseys made a comeback after 4 years of red jerseys under Dave Smith and Ron Meyer's first couple of years. My memory isn't what it should be these days. It was '78 when Russ Potts and Meyer went to all white. The athletic department was looking for ways to save money (as always I guess) and the rumor was that with white unis at home they only had to order one uniform.

In '78 Potts got a good deal on a bunch of red and white pom poms and handed out thousands to the crowd as they came into the Cotton Bowl when we played Houston. There were something like 62,000 people there after he had discounted and given away tickets. The hardcore SMU fans bitched because red and white are Houston's colors, not ours. Potts got angry about the criticism and went on a tirade about how white is a "neutral color" and that the fans should stop whining. Neverthless, he got butts in the seats.

Your welcomed.

You have an excellent memory.

You're absolutely right. That was a wild one. Potts was a great marketeer!!! Hitch killed if all off.

People don't realize but SMU was in real financial trouble back then. I was there from '74 to '78. They went through two presidents. But especially the athletic dept. I remember that the game programs for several years, if not one, was a one page flier & that was the roster for both teams. It was a mess after Fry left. Plus the ugliest uniforms in college football!!!

How can you go from the best unis & helmet to the worse in one year? LOL!! But we did!! Even today, I'm amazed how college administrators work - or don't??? How they can let a coach or anyone simply make stupid decisions??? Sort of like working for the gov't!!! A very insulated world.

I don't know what the big deal is. They wore these against Utah and I don't remember the criticism being as harsh then. I'm actually OK with them.

Glad you brought up the game program. I thought the Hawai'i Bowl game program was outstanding. Printed on newsprint-type paper - lots of color and action photos - good layout, articles and info. I think this format would be welcome at Ford. I know the "slick" to which we currently subscribe has a 4-page sig - which is the only change for each home game. Don't know the savings (if any) to go to the Hawai'i Bowl format. Wouldn't be as many pages, but I think it would better serve the purpose. Either way, I hope we have a 2010 season of classic "collegiate" covers and not the artsy, let-me-show-you-my-frown, downer covers. Wonder how much it cost to replace the JW cover this season - since they were already printed.
