Which is exactly why we got the DP-------a small, private school just isn't suppose to beat the big boys at their own game--and we did. One thing Eric & I have in common is our HATE for ut. As I've posted before...I'm so glad that those of you who were at SMU during the DP and no team, can finally start enjoying SMU football and I think we are on our way to returning to football glory days. This is a great closure to the DP era. I'm also going to mention that I was pleased/impressed with what Craig had to say on the show, too. I was touched by the comments former players made about being so happy to be welcomed back to their school. I loved the comments during the credits at the end, too.
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!Watching the scenes of a homecoming soccer game was hard...SO happy that the built ford on campus...I think in the long run this will be the saving of many generations of alumni who otherwise wouldn't have cared...Going to the cotton bowl was terrible...
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!
I have to admit, I too was at that soccer game. ![]()
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!I really enjoyed it. The film really demonstrated how wild things were. I thought all of the media people used in it were great. Like him or not, when Dale Hansen is confronting those 3 in that conference room and they're squirming and looking like a bunch of knuckleheads, you'd have to say the school got what it deserved.
No wonder why Sherwood Blount didn't want to be interviewed. I didn't know about the NCAA enforcement guy fainting as he left the press conference. Whoa! Since I grew up out west, I really didn't have a feel for what was going on. All I heard 1200 miles away was that SMU was on probation and then about the time I was accepted to the school, the death penalty came. I must tell you that being on campus for the falls 87 and 88 were very very bizarre. It was like the holdover students were in a fog and the ones like us were shocked what we were walking into. And couple Dr. Pye's overreaction academic policies, the loss of the program really split the campus up. To me, that created a disconnect within the community. Like Alex, I was at the 87 homecoming soccer game. People just couldn't believe they were at this thing. I think we beat North Texas? Anyway, I just appreciate how it was done. I'm glad I have it recorded.
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!
I have to agree w/ the assertions made in the film, it seems much more likely that our lack of political connections to the NCAA by way of us rising so quickly hurt us a great deal. if you read about the cam newton situational it becomes readily apparent that not only has the NCAA been working w/ them hand in hand through the whole process, but that they deliberately strategized about how to "suspend" his eligibility and immediately reinstate him w/o out the media catching wind until after...reducing the coverage and hoopla significantly. and when you combine that w/ the fact that we started boldly encroaching on the recruiting territory of powerhouses like PSU who were most definitely "in" w/ the NCAA then it becomes clearly that our fate was sealed. while SMU is known for its networking, in this case we jumped strait into the frying pan w/o understanding the need to work the NCAA as much as our own recruits, and had no idea why we got all crispied up. "There ain't nothing you can't solve with one more beer"

Absolutely. I remember at the time ED was trying to tell the NCAA that UT and A@M made SMU cheating look like small change, but they wouldn't listen to him and focused only on us. A couple of years later a pretty ugley ticket re-sale scandal at UT came to light, but the NCAA took no action at all. Typical. I have lived in Austin and the UT campus areafor 20 years, and I can tell you that there are numerous places around here where UT players never have to pick up a check. It is blatant and shameless and the NCAA doesnt care one whiff.
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!In looking at this objectively from what I watched, Dale Hansen did his job. It was the SMU people who basically hung themselves on what they said and how they reacted to it.

Such a good point! I hadn't thought of that, but you know its true. Hopefully Moreland watched it and is even more solid of a commit now!!

As was I...........it sucked!!! Peruna is my mascot!
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!lots of thoughts on this. Bob Lee had a great comment near the end. So many things are mind boggling. Why in the world would any SMU officials actually sit down for a FILMED interview with Dale Hansen or anyone else? What possible good could come from that? Just riduculous naivity/stupidity.
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!Probably because they had to.
Hanson's sitting there with a kid who is saying "They paid me." That's more than enough to go to press with - Don't kid yourself: Hanson was in some ways showing them an once of respect by giving them a chance to reply before it got aired, something he really didn't have to do. You are going to have to answer in some form, and since Hanson had a decent working relationship with Collins and Hitch they probably thought nothing that big would come of it - It was simply going to be Stanley's word vs. theirs; i.e. a drug using dropout who is already known to have shopped the story around vs. SMU. The guys probably thought it would make them look more innocent if they simpley sat down, denied it, and got it over with. Only there's an envelope.......
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!
Did SMU officials set a standard for stupidity? Oh my goodness yes. My only problem with Hanson, other than that he is a loud bore, is that his investigative journalism began and ended at SMU. Everyone was paying back in those days. But Hanson knew, and still knows, that the UT apologist Belos butter his bread. My grandmother's bridge club could have broken a similar story about UT and the Aggies if they had wanted to.
Re: Good Job, Thad!!!It was too bad that Sherwood wouldn't be interviewed................
