Bama's NT last year was from Australia. He was about 330lbs. and strong as a bull. He was more of a space eater. Their ends and lbs made most of the plays. UGA had a 350lb NT last season. Both of those schools seem to really recruit juco NT's.

As Kliff Kingsbury says, Alabama's D-Line is too big for speedy teams. With our new faster offense....

FWIW - all American teams we play from the Big East run more often than they pass, Temple and Cincinnati much more. Of the CUSA teams, Memphis and UCF run more, Memphis a lot more. Only UH and SMU pass more in the whole league and we both pass a lot more often, and at about the same rate. In 2012.

He originally committed to Hawaii out if high school but they didn't admit him because if questions about his high school transcript. He went JUCO and June Jones tried to recruit him. I think he actually visited. Eventually everyone offered, including Alabama and we were out then.

Do you have the quote where Kingsbury said that because Kevin Sumlin said that his defense needs to be bigger in weight to play in the SEC. As a result aTm has been recruiting bigger defensive players. aTm got beat by physical teams. Bama did win a national championship by the way. Here is a quote from someone from Vandy on Bama. "Just their size, they look like they eat weights," Vanderbilt's Hal said. "We've been trying to eat the weights, too, trying to get big and strong just like those guys."

It was a reference to his joke about the Alabama coach trying to get the rules for defensive substitutions changes.

Regarding NTs . . .
Darrian Wright is taller (6'2") than Pittman but not quite as heavy - 280lbs (not sure about strength - kind of hard to be stronger than Pitt . . . wish he was about 20 pounds heavier). I like the size of Spencer Hollie (6'4", 310) . . . I think we need 2-3 of that size per class even if they are 2 star types for depth (of course I'd want to them be better than 2 stars, but I'd add for size almost alone for a couple of ships). Anyway, I have high hopes for Minor. If he can put on other 20 pounds and stay fast, athletic/healthy, he'll be All World.
I won't repeat my opinions about our current state at the DE position . .

I think Holloway moved to OL may be an indication of the depth of DE...
Anyway, looked at a couple of other 3-4 teams.
UCLA has 300 lb NTs, and then at DE has 2 270s and a bunch of 260s
ND: 4 300, 2 290, 2 280, 2 270, 2 250
GT: 1 300, 2 280, 4 270 and several below that.
Alabama and Georgia are extremes, but I would say it is pretty consistent that 3-4 teams have DTs around 300 and DEs that are 280 or 270.
We are light at NT, but we have played with 280 tackles for years and be okay.

Alabama and Georgia know how to build defensive lines that stop you. They are extreme winners. GT plays a 4-3. Having a bunch of players at a position does not mean quality depth. We are not in CUSA anymore so 255 lb DE's and NT's will be less effective. We need to get our minds out of CUSA thinking. We are also recruiting bigger corners as we go into the new physically larger league as Coach Jones said in a video interview. Notre Dame front 3 286 at DE, 322 at NT, 347 at DE

Using Phil Steeles mag and going simply by weight, we stack up very favorably with 3-4 teams in AAC, MWC, and ACC. Didn't go any father, but seems a little unfair to compare us to Alabama, Georgia, and Notre Dame. Surprised at how few run the 3-4.

I guess it would be better to compare us to middle of the road teams the run that 3-4. I guess we are comfortable with being a middle of the road team. After all contrary to Rick Hart's statement we are not trying to win conference and national championships right? "We are excited about our membership in The American and are focused on pursuing conference and national championships." - Rick Hart
