I can't believe no one has mentioned the 1964 SMU-Tech game in Lubbock. A massive hailstorm dumped several inches of hail on Jones Stadium. Play was suspended until the weather cleared somewhat. One of my fellow band members thought at first the drummers were playing a weird cadence - but it was the hailstones hitting the drum heads! The trip home in the chartered propeller aircraft was no picnic, either, due to the turbulence.

I was at that game. When the hail started coming down, everyone (including the teams) headed for cover except the SMU band. I've always wondered about the band's sanity level.

After the game, the parking lot was ankle deep in runoff...of course Lubbock is so flat that was to be expected. 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

"Nothing stops the Mustang Band". As I recall there wasn't much room under the stands for band members and horns. But you may actually be right about the sanity thing.

I was at that game as well. Tulsa's last home game of the season and they had a 4:00 kickoff! Concession stands ran out of hot chocolate before halftime. It was so cold we stood the entire second half under the press box and shouted into the crowd mic after every good play for SMU.

TidePony Gets my vote. I was at that 1983 Sun Bowl in El Paso. Miserably cold day. What made it worse was the day before it was short sleeve weather. I've been to a lot of the games mentioned here (including the Cotton Bowl vs Pitt) but that Sun Bowl was the worst.

I would have to say TCU last year was the worst I've seen at Ford. Although the UH game from 2010 is a close second. It seemed like the rain never stopped that day. I didn't make if to the Navy game in 08 but the worst weather for a road game would also be TCU from 2009.

Good thread. I was at the Ford home opener (thought I was going to have heat stroke)...'83 Cotton Bowl (outcome made it worthwhile), and 2008 Navy game (totally destroyed my tailgate...plus, rain ruined SMU's chances...Navy didn't pass the entire game). I'll go with a three-way tie.

Not the worst but the weirdest...1997 at Utah. Heavy wet snow for the first half, blizzard like. The second half the sun came out and the temp rose into the 50's.

I can't remember the year. I thought it was '78 or '79. But, that game was cold, snowy and windy! We all froze. I was in a group of three, if you were two, then there were only five of us there! Flew back in a small plane, I was too cold to notice that front moving down to Dallas, we had thunder, sleet, wind and cold the whole way back.

Come to think of it, the last game in Lubbock was as hot as any game I've been to, including that game several years ago in College Station. I would say any game in Lubbock is the worst! How do they get recruits?

Don't want to be flying in some smallish private plane in that weather.

My Dad used to say fly in t-storms, one day you just don't come back :!:
May the forth be with us.

MexMustang: You flew back in a small plane, and we were crazy enough to drive back in the snow. Just outside Lubbock, near Idalou, I skid off the road and hit the only mailbox - the only thing standing for miles - on some West Texas cotton field. Damn, it was a really large, heavy mailbox and it made a big mess of the side of my car. Won't forget that game. I remember a few SMU fans at the game, so I guess we must of run into each other. We were fortunate to have some blankets because my grandmother live over on 27th Street and we came prepared. Tech is always an unpredictable place to play football. What's the series in the next few years? Does SMU play Tech in Lubbock or is this it for a while?

I remember sitting in fairly high in the stands, between the back of the end zone and the twenty. I had a sheep skin jacket on and a sweater (the jacket was too damn hot to wear anywhere, before or since). There was nothing from keeping the wind blowing up our backsides. I don't recall anyone around us. Best seats I have ever purchased at Tech save for some I received as a guest of one of the members of their board of governors. Normally I am relegated to the tortilla section under the scoreboard.
