For the 2014 recruiting class, Rivals ranked SMU #99. Out of 123. The bottom quantile, statistically speaking. Let that sink in for a minute.
It is hard to recruit successfully against lavishly funded SEC schools and national programs such as UT, Ohio State, Michigan, and USC. But here are some of the schools that out recruited June, per Rivals:
Tulsa Houston Middle Tennessee Tulane LA Tech Florida International Arkansas State Florida Atlantic Southern Miss Memphis Toledo Rice Texas State Ball State
Some of these schools probably have indoor practice facilities; some bigger meeting rooms; some may even have nicer stadiums (though I doubt it). But these aren't even the Iowa States, Wake Forests, and Purdues of FBS. These are schools that SMU should out recruit every year.
In what sane universe is there justification for SMU being out recruited by Arkansas State, Texas State, Ball State, and some Florida schools that people can't tell apart all in the same year?
All true ....^^^^

This is a chicken an egg thing. We have to play tough teams so we don't have a good record. We don't have a good record because we don't have the facilities that the tough teams have. Let's step back for a few moments here. TCU looks like someone vomited on all the buildings. Sure they have an indoor practice facility but come on. Baylor is in an armpit of a town. Lets be real here. One of the pitches was that you play here, you get to play and you get to play against the big boys now and then so you get some attention from the scouts. I'm sorry, but those are excuses. We have a ton of things to offer players that TCU and Baylor don't have and never will have. JJ needs to take a few long walks around campus and look at our alumni who's who. Then he might have an clue about how to recruit at SMU. Life after football in corporate America, or do you want to work at a Taco Bell.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

If we are trying to play a legit schedule and make money we might as well play TCU and 2-3 other away games against power programs like Michigan, Tennessee, etc. and just collect checks. That is the model Rice has followed for a long time.
To be completely honest, I think we need to take a step back and recognize where we are in the pecking order of FBS. I look at our non-conference schedule and, honestly, see no sane reasoning behind it. Why do we even have Aggy, Baylor, and Tech on our schedule? To get that one sellout a year where THEIR fans buy all the tickets in our stadium... let's all be honest here - Aggy, Tech, etc don't agree to a home and home because they respect our program... they agree to it to give their DFW area fans a relatively inexpensive game every other year to see their team play (because they buy ALL the tickets). From a financial standpoint, it sort of makes sense but we could replace that by playing one paycheck game a year against a non-Texas major program and dropping the ruse that we're somehow still in the Southwest Conference. In my opinion, we'll never build our own fanbase by filling our stadium with A&M, Tech, and Baylor fans who only come to see their own team play. If we're going to do a home and home with a P5 conference team, find a mid/lower level SEC or ACC team to play.

If we were a competent team, all this scheduling hand-wringing would be moot. We'd be looking forward to taking down these semi-giants. Instead, we are trying to find the least resistance way to get to 6 wins. Belch.

Are you saying there are a lot of "diamonds in the rough" on the team?

No, because I inserted the word "negative".
