He'd probably be the youngest HC in the FBS at 29. It'd be a risky, but novel approach with a lot of potential upside.

Re: Which Direction do we go??No way we get Spavital or Chad Morris.
Up and comers on everybody's short list don't come to SMU. They bide their time until a P5 job opens up and they can make serious money by signing the extension if they are successful. See Kliff Kingsbury's recent TT deal. No for guys like Spavital SMU is too risky and it doesn't give them a good career path. Butch Davis. I know about the baggage but LB had recruiting issues at KU...... Butch is at they'd of his career, no P5 wants him and he can identify talent and recruit it. Pony 81
Re: Which Direction do we go??
As bad as Baylor was, they still had the Big XII to sell. Even TCU back in the MW days had the hope of future BCS affiliation. It's going to take the ultimate used car salesman to get high level recruits to SMU now. Especially since we still shy away from the risky qualifiers. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four

Butch's offenses were worse than ours when he was at North Carolina. #HammerDown

Re: Which Direction do we go??
Agreed. Patterson did not have much of a conference to sell but he built relationships with Texas HS coaches and they helped him. Same with Coker. #HammerDown
Re: Which Direction do we go??Spavital is a good idea but what about Ken Niumatalolo at Navy or Troy Calhoun at Air Force?
Calhoun would be a good choice.
Re: Which Direction do we go??
Can't see either leaving their jobs for here especially Calhoun who went to Air Force and turned down better jobs to stay there. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Which Direction do we go??Money works folks. These guys are not in this game for fun it is their career and 2M is still a very viable package.
Re: Which Direction do we go??Who did Calhoun turn down to stay at AFA?
Re: Which Direction do we go??Well...
The best two up and comers for SMU would be Chad Morris and Jake Spavital. It would take big money to pry them away from Clemson and A&M though. Former Mizzou OC David Yost might be worth a look though his oddball image may scare some off. Of the older retreads, I think Mike Sherman and Dennis Franchione would be the most realistic gets. Sherman is currently unemployed and his A&M salary when he was hired was actually less than what June currently gets at $1.8 million. He is extremely well respected by Texas high school coaches and would likely be SMU's best recruiter in decades. His play calling can be very suspect and he won't excite the fan base though. Fran would ditch Texas State in a heart beat. That dude is all about the money and seems to be doing ok at Texas State. Of course, he was horrible at A&M and I've heard more than one Texas HS coach really crap on him. I'm leaving off Larry Coker b/c even though I think he'd actually work his butt off and do well he is old enough that he's probably planning on retiring at UTSA.

Tennessee and the Denver Broncos were the two most publicized ones. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Which Direction do we go??
I think they wanted him at Tennessee nut the fans thought he would bring the triple option offense with him (which he wasn't) so they did not hire him. #HammerDown
