Question - did JJ check out 3 years ago recruiting wise? Most would answer Yes
Question - does JJ have an enormous ego? Most would answer Yes
Question - is JJ a vindictive man? You decide, but if you've answered Yes to these 3 questions, it leads to the this question.
Question - did JJ, not getting his way and being egotistical & vindictive, did he deliberately train-wreck this program talent wise?
I don't know, I'm too far away. But it certainly wouldn't surprise me.
Final Question - would it bring joy to JJ's heart if we finally succeeded ala BB, now that he is gone? I say most definitely NOT. Too big a hit on his ego (one of the reasons I was so happy with LB's success) and maybe another underlying reason he might have left us to fail.

Good questions. But I really don't see where he did anything different than he had ever done in his time with us. Recruiting stopped when he got rid of Rheibold and Klemm. I think his ego was too big to sabotage us while he was still actively coaching (other than trying to sabotage us in the press). He just thought his offensive genius status was such that he could do it with any personnel. He gave up rather than getting proven wrong.

I think he also thought that receivers and quarterback would be lining up at his door because he was June Jones instead of him having to go out and recruit hard to get them.

and that's the bottom line. Have to remember that when JJ came in here, he was one of the highest profile college football coaches in the country, having accomplished what he did at Hawaii. I really think he thought some very talented guys would be lining up to come play for him and rather than hire a staff focused on recruiting, he hired guys he thought could "coach our guys up" once they came in. It was pretty obvious he was demoralized by the ASU fiasco and from that point on, he appeared to have even less motivation to be here. The final straw was watching how quickly Larry Brown came in and turned around the bball program. You know JJ had to be kicking himself while thinking "if only I had applied that same approach". Maybe we actually would have a roster that would have been ready to compete with this year's schedule

I doubt this thought ever crossed his mind.

I thought it was written all over his face when he introduced coach Brown at the recruiting roundup meeting in February

Maybe he was thinking that CP but I just have a hard time believing that crossed his mind. I am not beating up on JJ with that statement

perhaps the "tongue in cheek" post of the year... There really is no way to lipstick the pig that is SMU football currently. The talking heads yesterday were very generous, as were the Aggies, in not piling on too hard. Since we can easily view things through the rear-view mirror or the windshield, I choose to look forward to the 2 Million dollars getting us a coach that will prepare us well for the games to come.

People could see what happened this year coming a mile away but apparently JasonB still thinks JJ recruited well.

I realize you guys are probably just being silly and sarcastic, but I think what some people (myself, JasonB, maybe PonyPride) on the board have been defending is not the fact that June is an ace recruiter -- CLEARLY he is not. We were merely defending the assertion made by some on this forum that "the cupboard is bare". It is not. Despite the outcome of this season, there is some talent on this roster, although it is clearly: A) not enough depth, B) not enough playmakers, C) not developed enough, D) not prepared well enough, or E) all of the above.
What I said coming into the season is that according to several coaches we talked to as well as the 'tale of the tape' we were supposed to be bigger and more athletic than we've been in the past. After living through this season and seeing us get ran over, I think the jury may be out on the "more athletic" point. But when you look on the sidelines and see kids like Gentry, Gresham, Briggs, Brown (who broke a bunch of strength records as a frosh), Chamagua, Gaines, Hollie, Saena, etc., I think "gee, we don't look quite like the high school team as we have in some prior years." I don't want to speak for the other guys, but I think that's the only point they were trying to make. I think both JasonB and PonyPride predicted something like 4 wins this season, so it's not like anybody was gushing over this team.

If the goal is to win championships then yes the cupboard is most certainly bare.
