Thank you. I was trying to figure out when Gaines got hurt. I do believe he must have thought Gresham by mistake.

That number means a lot in case you may not be aware. A lot of people care about that number and it should be retired.
Jerry seems cool with the current method of honoring the number.

I guess you have spoken with him to know that. Still does not mean his number should not be retired. As you know June created that because he got snubbed in getting his number retired. It is a secondary prize not the best prize.

Team vote. SMU does not retire numbers.

Numbers or jersies, whichever one SMU retires his needs to be retired. He should be in their along side Raymond Berry and the others.

i like that we don't retire numbers. It is hard to draw the line and it is kind of a worthless thing to do on whole. We honor Jerry a different way, and it seems even better to me than retiring his number.

We do retire jersies. I would think he would be in consideration on the next vote.

You can't really 'retire' numbers in football (can't have three digits on the jersey or two guys on field with same number). But we do have a few numbered flags flying over Ford. Guessing 37 wont be worn very often.
Edit: I guess we have actually retired some numbers, never mind. My bad.

New edit: We may retire the player's jersey, but the number is not retired.

Right, we can retire jersies. I misspoke and said numbers but jersies is what I meant. http://www.smumustangs.com/sports/m-foo ... 08aaa.html

i think the method we use to honor Levias by awarding his number to a deserving team leader every year is a great way to do it, very special.

why would SMU retire Raymond Berry's number? He's an NFL great-granted but didn't exactly set the world on fire at SMU. Not enough numbers to go around. Jerry LeVias is in SMU Hall of Fame but I think one day I'd like to see a permanent Jerry LeVias memorial as well as one for the Pony Express

So are you saying that he should never be considered for jersey retirement especially considering why JJ started doing the number awarding in the first place? Just because you retire a jersey does not mean you have to stop the award thing.
