Lowest bidder? Ya think? Hey dummy, we're a state school, run by the State of Texas. You're a private school, just in case you didn't know. It makes a difference.

In reality, UH's campus has the oldest buildings in the middle. They were built in the late 1920s. It spanned out from there. It's like looking at tree rings when you look at our campus. You can see the growth that took place in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's... and the must current buildings on the outside. The architecture reflects the decade in which the buildings were made. We all wish UH had stuck with one look, sure. Ugly though? Give me a break. There is absolutely nothing ugly about our campus. It just looks different compared to yours. If you don't have an open mind to new and different things, the whole world must be an ugly place to you guys. I feel sorry for you.

I like the wind-break pattern of your trees. It reminds me of my youth in Dust Bowl-era Oklahoma. You just don't see enough of that anymore.

Since trees are native to Houston, our Spanish moss covered live oaks are not uniformly spaced...just totally random. How uncool is that?

Well, I did go to law school at UofH. I actually enjoyed my time in Houston more than (i) I expected; and (ii) will admit. Now the law school ain't the undergrad and I rarely walked all over campus except to pay some stupid ticket or get a transcript and occasionally venture to the cafeteria to pick up some chick fil a. It isn't a very pretty campus. And the architectural style is all over the map. Again, it is built on a swamp.

Thats nothin...In the 90s a day care shut down in NW Houston and a topless bar moved in!

From babies to babes....well...sorta...not exactly a top shelf place if you know what I mean...

...and before anybody gets on their horse...I was in Dallas for a convention last month..and stayed at the Radisson on Mockingbird. Ain't no shortage of those bars near your place either...and your not too far from some pretty pathetic neighborhoods either.

Whats this you ask?

This is what you get when you let the business school, in the 80s, make the architecture calls.

To be fair though...another side...

Mustang98 said it well. UH's campus has a lot of greenery and is deceivingly nice for a large public university. My wife teaches at SMU and I am involved with the Cox School so I go to SMU a lot. It's a well planned, nice campus. The drive up the Boulevard is very pleasant, possibly one of the best on any campus. I remember Stanford's drive up being quite nice as well. The fact that the campus is in UP and borders HP with HP UMC on the southern border of the school is a big plus. There isn't a lot of school spirit stuff around SMU -- nor around UH -- like there is at other leading traditional campuses. Some of the off campus spirit shops sell UT and Tech stuff. That was hard to understand.

Here's my own story, as if anyone cares. I graduated from Lufkin HS in 1986. My dad went to TCU for one year (Paschal grad) and then on to graduate from UNT due to cost. I don't remember any of the SMU scandals but I'm sure they made the news. I also don't remember too much about Phi Slama Jama or Jackie Sherrill's 1985 success or anything he did at Pittsburg or Bill Yeoman. I knew Earl Campbell (Tyler boy) and Ham/Lam/Jam Jones and the whole Cowboys and Longhorns culture that my grandfather had (Sherman native). The Boys and Horns were on TV all the time so they were natural favs.

When it came to college, I visited TCU and it seemed too preppy. And if TCU was too preppy, SMU probably would have been as well. UT was too big and didn't have much grass but had great academics. It also didn't offer much scholarship money relative to A&M and UH. UH ultimately offered more $$, had a great honors program and it was in a big city. I was sick of small town USA but UH had to recruit me to go there because I hadn't heard much of it before and only a couple of my classmates were going there.

In retrospect, I'm very glad I went to UH and I learned a lot from its diversity. I will be happy if our kids end up going to UH's Honors College or SMU, and I hope SMU gets its honors program in shape by then.
