It only takes a rumor to get the ball rolling. Each conference is drawing up contingency plans because they can’t afford to suffer the consequences of being left behind. Even if the Big 10 isn’t the first to move there’s an irreversible momentum underway that at some point will flash. The SEC, PAC 10 and ACC will not wait on Big 10 action. If the event is large enough the whole BCS system will reorganize in the aftermath. There may be fewer BCS conferences and maybe even a playoff system as a result. How could you crown a National Champion if 4-6 of the top 10 teams are in the same conference and each have a loss or two? The core of all decisions will be factors that affect financial bottom line (geographic TV market, market share, marquee match ups, merchandise sales, game attendance, size and wealth of athletic department, name recognition/appeal…..).
