ABCModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: ABCBelieve me, life ends with the end of the final quarter in the final game.
Remember, you are only as good as your next play. So one stops being good when there is no next play. And of course, play every play like it’s your last. But when there is no play to play, one can't live as if it is the last. One simply can’t live without a current play or next play. One just goes through life with all the routine ups and downs of life, love, mirth, merriment, sorrow, disappointment and thrills but never ever to experience real life in a game of football.
Re: ABC
I realize that you are probably just trying to be funny, but I still wanted to address this. Playing up the rich kid elitist angle would be an incredible mistake. For starters, not everyone who goes to SMU is an elitist trust fund snob. There's a good percentage of "regular" kids, trying to get a good education believe it or not. Playing up an elitist rich kid image would do nothing but make the majority of the country absolutely despise us. Is that something we really need to do when we are struggling to put people in the stands? 3rd of all, look at the players we are trying to recruit to our school. Do you honestly think we'd have a better chance of getting these good recruits and building our program into something special when we are acting like a bunch of privileged brats? I guarantee you 99% of the kids we are recruiting are not going to fit into that category. And I doubt they would want to sign up to be in that environment.
Re: ABCI passed it off as drunken lunacy. I didn't say anything controversial- ESPN's own description of Pony Excess is much worse. The actual facts are much worse. I think he thought it was a shot at Thad when I was simply describing actual events. I think its great Thad got an opportunity to document exactly what happened at SMU. I've always wondered why someone hasn't done it before although the Classic "Johnny Be Good" movie which came out shortly after the DP definitely had inspiration in numerous scenes from the SMU, TCU (OleTex?)and SWC cheating scandals. But the story of the Death Penalty is not really a story about cheating as much as it is a story about a university that was corrupted to its core by its own "leaders" and lost perspective and control of its institutional mission. You couldn't make up a better story than what went on around here and in the SWC

Re: ABC
Well, if we had topless tutors for the football team to stay eligible...that'd be a better story. Speaking of which, why didn't we? I mean we're cheating, why not go all in and be REALLY famous.
Re: ABCNorm Hitges actually ran with a story at the time about SMU escorts providing sexual favors to recruits but he backed off that story and I think it was denied in the Bishop's Investigation findings and SMU report to NCAA. No evidence surfaced.

Re: ABCWe did have a few co-eds of easy virtue back in the day. I'm sure there are still some on every college campus in America. That's not really a story. And quite frankly, I'm sure much of that was more urban legend than reality. A recruit goes on a visit, comes home and his buddies ask if he got laid, or went to a strip club? Of course, he will say he did. After all he doesn't want anyone to think he's a dweeb. And suddenly all recruits got laid by an army of slutty escorts after going to 7 strip clubs.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: ABCWhat I'm interested to find out is whether 25 years of time has loosened a few lips about what Texas recruiting was really like in the 1970s and 1980s. As I've said many times you can't tell this story fully without discussing the newspaper war and rampant cheating that lead to multiple probations at TCU, A&M, Oklahoma St, OU, Arkansas, Texas Tech, UT , Houston, Baylor(BB) as well.
