1. It's not about being patriotic. 2. The uniforms didn't miss any tackles or drop any passes. 3. The uniforms didn't look bad at all, if we were Texas Tech or Maryland ... but they weren't ugly on their own. 4. Traditions change, or at least get modified every now and then. I don't hold any grudges against Coach Jones for breaking the tradition of sitting at home every in December every year for the last 20 years. I don't like the black uniforms, because as has been said here many times, we have the best uniforms in the country ... especially the white uniform, and white isn't a school color, either. I don't want to see the black uniforms again, but you can bet we will. The list of teams that have trotted out a black uniform is a lengthy one. It's time to grit our teeth and let it go. I don't think it has anything to do with selling gear, because we don't sell much, anyway. I assume it's because it is believed that the uniforms will appeal to recruits. If that's the reasoning, fine ... just call it what it is. By the way, did anyone see the ESPN.com column about this? http://espn.go.com/espn/page2/index?id=5973905

Don't think there are many 17 year olds on the team and I'm pretty sure they don't want black full time but supported what this one time uni meant.
mrflinnbob: The "17-year-olds" was in reference to soccermom's earlier poster who said her 17-year-old thought the black jerseys were "sick looking" - that means they liked them (I think). The team may have enjoyed wearing the black jerseys, but I don't think this decision was entirely about them.

Well we WON the Hawaii Bowl last year while wearing our school colors. Yes, younger people like black, I guess, but I don't understand why JJ wants to stray away from our school colors and it's allowed to happen! To each his own, but I think tradition is something everyone should be proud of........oh, by the way........we wore red and blue during SMU's hay day. I hope the black stuff is OVER with for good!

Maybe you haven't heard, but JJ isn't concerned about our traditions. He doesn't like Peruna. He wears black to practice and on the sidelines, sometimes without even an SMU logo showing.
He's not the first coach to disregard a school's tradition in favor of his own personal tastes, and it's far from the first time at SMU. We had a football coach, Dave Smith, who wanted us to look like Ohio State. We had a basketball coach, Notre Dame alum John Shumate, who outfitted the team in blue and white uniforms in the same style that Notre Dame wore at the time.
Coaches at established programs embrace traditions because it's the smart thing to do, politically. They also don't feel a need to glam-up the uniforms to attract recruits, because winning sells itself.
But there are traditions and then there traditions. Uniforms naturally evolve and change over time. School colors and mascots usually don't change.

Got cha..... I talked to a couple of kids on the team and they actually said it was fun for a one time thing. I didn't get the impression that they wanted to continue on with black at all.

I say we bring back the '81-'83 blue variety, when we begin to play like those teams!

is this really why we aren't using the blue unis anymore? those beat the hell out of the red, the white, the black, and anything else we've run out there. bring em back

Unless June Jones takes over your football program and decides your mascot is too gay

If they break those things out (complete with the collars), especially if they're made with the new adidas "seamless" technology/stype, the sale of SMU jerseys would be like nothing the school has imagined. I know I'd buy a bunch of them.

I Love it, To the point i started laughing my guts out & said JJ has done it again. He doesn't give a crap about tradition. As much as i like the guy, He'll do what ever he want's to the point where tradition will be ruined
