This mess can turn around just as quickly as it fell apart. If Hart hires the right head coach, and in turn if he hires the right support staff watch how fast we improve. The new coach must pull a Larry Brown and walk hand in hand with the SMU community. Hopefully, players come with the head coach and another few with the assistants. This can happen!

Not defending Hart on everything but I believe the contract buyout was lowered as part of the extension.

If you were in an environment where no one cared about you or what you did (we all know that being in the sport, or band, or any activity can define who you are...a pretty big thing to a 18-25 year old), then you would rally around anyone who did support you. Doesn't matter whether that support was actually positive, it was impressionable. Once again, how about we stop lashing out at these players and start calling the entire system out. You want to punish someone to make yourself feel better, call out that private and then feel good about how you have made an impact. You want to challenge the system that created the calamity and fostered this mentality, call out and challenge the generals. June is gone, but he was one leg of a tripod. Hart is new, but he was here for 2 seasons and allowed this monstrosity to get worse. Where was he and what did he do last season as the wheels began to fall off? What did he do when he looked at the list of football commits last year and this year and noticed, well, a complete lack of quality? And Turner, well, he has been here since '95. He has made amazing changes in the academics and in the footprint of the school. That is great. We are talking about football here, so what is his role and where was he as the program floundered? Where was he when the ASU crap hit the fan, and why did he not bring JJ and his handler into his office and set things straight? Let's look at the big picture here and demand the level of commitment from the school and athletics department that we are demanding from our current and former players. How about we expect the 40+ year old leaders act like leaders and adults before we call out the 20 year olds for acting like, well, 20 year olds.
You really wanted Hart to fire the only winning coach (at the time) of this program since the DP as his first move? Seriously? He would have been hung out to dry.
Really? That is what you got from this? I would love to know what Hart did, from his hiring to September '14, regarding the football program. I really like what I have seen from him recently, but I want to see more. I think he understands this game much better than his predecessors who have just cashed a check based on their knowledge (and don't lie to yourself here) that the greater SMU community could have cared less about football from the death penalty on. But don't forget, he was hired to improve the program (as are all new hires...sort of why you replace someone and make a hire in the first place). I would be willing to bet he did make inquiries and raised protestations to issues, and was ignored by Turner. Wouldn't shock me. Does that make it better for you?
Did I say anything to the contrary? What I was talking about was the end result. You should send your resume to JJ. He values your level of insight and intellect.

The BB team was competitive in every game and beat the national champ twice. Big difference from the FB team. When (if) FB does that, they will get similar fanfare.

Yes...to an extent. You get a new coach and staff, but you have the same student body. And you have the same apathetic community. That coach could be offering big money and more, but they are competing against other programs with a community and a school that is behind the team and players. That is possibly the largest prohibitor to quick success. This can be combatted, to an extent, by an aggressive PR campaign on campus and in the community. Give away free tickets to local school and charities. Get coaches and former players involved in Mustang Corral (or whatever the freshman indoc is called). Start an agressive multi-media campaign that targets the key demographics. Make Ford Stadium the place to be on game day like Moody is. And don't get defeated when this takes longer than you want. Growing a basketball program with 10 players having a big impact on the season on the court is easier than a football team.

I need to take a break from this board until basketball season. Pretty much everything related to smu football makes me nauseated right now. Wake me up when this sh*t is over and we have a fresh canvas

2001 grad here...athletes never had a problem 'being embraced' during my tenure. Half the football team was Pike. Tons of football players in my classes and all were chummy with just about everyone. I specifically remember seeing basketball players at any/all greek parties I attended. Sasser was one such bball guy who always had multiple players with him at parties.
Yeah unfortunately I truly do not feel that is accurate any more as far as football is concerned. Of course there are a few outliers (pike football players). It's is not fair to our athletes and greek life should be ashamed but I do think that, that is some of the problem and why these former players don't necessarily love their alma mater.

If anyone really wants to question Hart, go out there and watch him during the games. He's not hiding away. He's not locked up in a press box like almost every other AD. He's out on the sidelines, and I've seen for two straight weeks now trying to get the crowd involved and cheering on the team right beside them.
Firing JJ as his first move would've been ridiculously stupid. He has his chance now to make his mark, whether he's just a figure head for whomever is actually in charge or not.

THIS. Hart has been the person who has made the right calls. Even up to this point. In large part due to when he entered this program.

End of the fourth quarter Hart was walking down to stand on the sidelines until the end of the game. He walked through the student section (what was left of it) for some reason on his way to the field. While he did he told multiple students thanks guys for staying we all really appreciate it. I thought it was a nice gesture.

From afar it does seem like he is trying to change the culture

If this is really Beasley the hell with him. SMU fans cheered for him to do well for the cowvoys. Every other regional school wanted him to fail. Congrats now you probably have even fewer fans. Let's see what the lazy [deleted] jones does for you now. I won't root for you anymore

In the meantime, Thomas Morstead once again posted a pic in his lucky SMU cap before boarding the Saints charter to Dallas. Talk about a class act - highly doubt you'll see any knucklehead tweets out of him. Pretty sure he'll forever support SMU, through both thick & thin.
And unfortunate that these tweets were fired off today because I really enjoyed the "Mustangs in the NFL" montage on the scoreboard today.
