Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramIPF are almost always paid for by private donations not the "administration" just like every athletic facility on the SMU campus. Same as the IPF at all the other Texas schools that have them
TCU: Following a $7-million gift from the Jane and John Justin Foundation and Cox Family, the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility and Cox Field is an 80,000-square foot complex that features an 80-yard field with a regulation 52-yard width and two full end zones. The climate-controlled facility measures 60 feet from turf to the highest point of its vaulted ceiling, which allows for all passing and kicking drills. Baylor: Baylor University gained yards in its quest for gridiron glory with the Nov. 15 groundbreaking ceremony of the Jay and Jenny Allison Indoor Football Practice Facility. The facility provides a critical component of the vision for the Alwin O. and Dorothy Highers Athletics Complex and will provide Baylor student-athletes with a premier practice space as they strive for victory. The Allisons' generous lead gift for the Jay and Jenny Allison Indoor Football Practice Facility lifts up Baylor's football student-athletes and coaching staff as they work to build a championship program. Texas A&M: Texas A&M University has received a $9 million gift from alumnus Artie McFerrin to support the construction of an indoor practice facility for its football team. (BTW Dennis Franchione gave 1 Million to start the funding drive-JUNE? Texas: FRANK DENIUS FIELDS-Located at the former site of the historic Villa Capri Hotel between Red River Street and Interstate 35 just east of the LBJ Library, the much-anticipated practice fields for Texas Football were constructed with the help of a donation from Austin attorney and former World War II hero Frank Denius. The facility features three full-sized grass fields and an indoor artificial turf practice area. OSU STILLWATER, Okla. — Sherman Smith, a former fraternity brother of renowned Oklahoma State booster Boone Pickens, donated $20 million to the university today for a proposed indoor practice facility that will bear his name. The proposed $50-million multi-purpose indoor facility will be the size of a soccer field and have a 90-foot-high clearance. Many sports, including football, baseball, softball and track, will use the facility. Last edited by Stallion on Sun Nov 09, 2014 4:13 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramCouldn't SMU start a fundraiser for the IPF? If you for example get at least 20,000 alumni to give $100 that would put us at $2M which would help ease the load on a larger donation from our CoC. Put up a website that builds an animated IPF every time a gift is made. I would give $100 (and possibly more) if SMU started an athletic facilities fund.
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramI heard we had a lead ipf donor available years ago but Turner wanted to use the funds elsewhere
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
considering the fact there are only 1,667 Mustang Club members in 2014, good luck finding those 20,000 people who care enough about SMU football to give $100. When you find them, you might then work on getting them to attend our football games. If you can fix our attendance problem at Ford, we just might have a shot at becoming relevant again. Good place to start would be making Mustang Club membership for students a way to get into Moody, which is really the only SMU ticket in high demand. I don't know if we have ever solicited students for the MC, but that's a good way to at least keep membership in their minds as alumni. That 1.667 figure is a sad commentary on how few people care about SMU athletics and you have to figure that number is up because of what it takes to get a decent seat in Moody now. Long live the 1500
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
I hope the lead donor for the IPF told Turner to take a leap. It is very apparent that RGT is NOT committed to a P5 level of athletic excellence. When is everyone going to wake up and realize this? ![]()
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramWe had the funds and the site. Jones nixed it. Put blame where it is rightfully due.

Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
Question is, do we still have funds and the site? Didn't Hart say we were building an IPF in Wescott soon?
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramAre private donations paying for all of the new buildings, renovations and construction on campus?
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramI wonder how much the other schools use their IPF for track, baseball, and soccer - and that makes it more valuable to them.
An IPF for SMU seems like it would be used for football, soccer, and women's track. While that does not mean we should not build one, it seems to be of less use for SMU than for some other schools. I think timing wise, if an IPF will go where Westcott is (which I have heard is the plan), then I don't think it happens till the outdoor swimming pool goes. That would hopefully be the fall of 2016. Then we would be able to build out a change to Westcott (if that is where it goes) and whatever will go on the sites of the indoor and outdoor pools.
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football ProgramTCU Frog Club had 7,178 members in 2012 4 1/2 times more than the SMU Mustang Club if Charleston's numbers were right

Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
Their football program has been winning for almost 10 years. We have just recently started to become really good in basketball. There needs to be a better job by SMU to engage with young alumni.
Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
I find that hard to believe but I'm not saying you're wrong. Really sad if that's truly the case. Pathetic actually.

Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
There is, of course, a rather more cogent discussion about athletic endowments, etc., on the "Around the Hilltop" page with the usual criticism of the accounting rules used. But why think small? Find 20,000 donors, whether alumni or not, who will give 100 grand each and you've got 2 billions. The if you can invest at 3% you can fund all 95 'ships for the football team. What is the present endowment for the Unversity? Anyone know what the gift would have to be if they named a faculty members position after you?
