The "insults" as you call them may have been off topic, but they are totally warranted. This football team has one winning season in the last twenty years. The current coaching regime has won four times on the road in five years, and has the worst season in SMU history under their belts. We are all praying for a 6-6 record so we can say we were bowl eligible and call that an accomplishment, notwithstanding we won't go to a bowl with that record. We are peaking this year, and all indications are we will fall off at talent in some our strongest positions next year. We still cannot recruit competitively the same caliber players as even TCU, and there is no end in sight to that problem. So please forgive him if he is a frustrated alum who is tired of all the losing and excuses. He has a platform to make his thoughts known, and you should not begrudge him for using it.
The comments were unwarranted because they were off-topic "pot shots" at SMU. Had SMU been in some other way introduced to the conversation then there would be absolutely no problem in him addressing the recent state of SMU football.
To be honest, I'm praying for 8-4. 6-6 is a disappointment to me. 6-6 against for the most part against mediocre to bad teams is bad. I totally disagree that "we are peaking his year". We have many extraordinary players returning for many seasons in the future.
Craig James has a right to be frustrated with all the losing and crap excuses we have gotten before, and yes, he does have an excellent platform to make his thoughts known, but there is a way to do so without defacing your alma mater. Use some common sense, having a way to say what's on your mind does not mean you get to make unnecessary comments about a program that's not even being discussed. If he wants things to be different, defacing the program and adding fuel to the image SMU has gotten, on it's own, for having a horrible football team. Most college football fans get little to no information about SMU and they don't care enough to go look for it, but when a broadcaster voices his discontent to millions of people he is not helping anyone, especially SMU.

And for us semi-old-timers, what play, game, and date was that again?
1980 SMU/UT. Freshman Lance McIlhenny's first game against #2 Texas in Austin. Pitch (precalled) from McIlhenny to Craig James around right end for approximately 50 yards and a TD as ponyte threw a clearing block. SMU went on to win and the PonyExpress was off and running full speed.
Thanks, mrydel. I would love to see lots of old clips tonight to remind those who remember that we've had some good days and players, and to inform those under the age of 22 that we had a football team prior to 1989.

Stallion and some other people on this board are totally out of touch. The thread WAS about making funny signs, not totally "off topic". Ever watch college gameday?? There are about 400 signs every week that are "off topic" but are hilarious. That is obviously what ESPN wants or they would not let them behind the camera. I have another question for Stallion. When CJ bashes SMU on TV you say he is joking around blah blah blah but the second a person posts a funny joke for a sign, you lose it and start rambling about how a joke on a sign will cause all these people to hate SMU and not support it. How many people see this board? How many people see CJ on national TV bashing SMU? Who do you think is influencing more people not to get involved?

If you don't think there is a difference between "Lee Corso wears a merkin" and something that mocks or belittles an alum while he calls a game at his alma matter, then you need to have your head examined.
BTW, I flipped through "A Payroll to Meet" again. There ain't one reference to James getting a dime. Dickerson-yes. Others-yes. James-no. Does say James drove the same cr@ppy Honda his entire time at SMU.
Let Orsini, Turner or Bennett pull James aside and say something to him if they think he's offended SMU. Trust me, the last thing you want is to irritate a gay right before or while he is on national television. He has the microphone and you don't. P!$$ing him off is not a smart thing to do.
Now, if you can be good natured and funny, that is fine. That is why I liked "Mcilhaney should have thrown more." First, everyone that knows what it means knows it is riduclous. Second, 98% of the audience wouldn't get it. Third, if James wanted to, he could have said something quick in explaining it like, "I agree, if we'd thrown more, we might have beaten Arkansas."

I never mentioned Lee Corso, I mentioned the home town fans holding up signs making fun of former players, coaches, current players, current coaches and everybody else you can think of. Like I said, some of you are out of touch.

How many of those "former players, coaches, current players, current coaches" were about to be attached to a microphone for three hours and their only job was to talk?
It. Isn't. The. Same. Thing.

If we can not pride ourselves in the former players and coaches that put our school into prominence, then in whom are we going to have pride. I will say as I said about a week ago, I think most of us will be pleasantly surprised with how Mr. James conducts himself tonight. I was watching the same game when he made the derogatory remark that has been mentioned. I did not hear him the time he said SMU but the next time they discussed the same two teams he compared Illinois to another lowly ranked team. ( I do not recall at this time who it was.) I think he was just trying to make a point and probably felt like he should not have said SMU when he did but it was probably the first school that came to mind since our record had not been stellar lately. Just let it be. He has much more power in reaching the public than do we. Let us just hope he does us proud tonight. I think he will as long as the team does not go into the tank.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Wow. I missed this explosion. Making fun of the DP and CJ is funny. No matter how you cut it. For all I know, We only paid players for one year and got nailed for it. The fact of the matter is, who was/wasn't paid is irrelevant because it's a stereotypical joke about SMU.
Sir, shooting-star, sir. Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.

Someone posted a sign saying "SMU: We're Cheating Death" in our section.
