What more could anyone ask of their mascot than this... The name "Peruna" is given to each successive live mascot. A black shetland pony, Peruna has been present at every SMU home football game for over 70 years. "Peruna" also refers to the costumed mascot and SMU's fight song. Other notable incidents involving Peruna are when he tried to mount Texas Tech's horse, Misty, sent the University of Texas Longhorn Bevo to the ground with a kick in the side, and defacated at midfield during a TCU - SMU game, the week that TCU unveiled the school's brand new Field Turf.

Also killed the Fordham Ram with a kick during a game on the sideline.

I hate all this insecurity crap.
Alabama has a damn ELEPHANT UMiami has a bird (*gasp* it's NOT a hurricane?!?!?!) Notre Dame has a LEPRECHAUN (they must be the fightin' leprechauns, right? We all know Irish folks don't actually look like that!) TTech has a guy in a BLACK suit riding a BLACK horse... RED raiders??? aTm has a freaking herding dog.
Do you think those school's fans all [deleted] their pants when asked about the mascots? No, they explain that it's a TRADITION, and it's worth keeping it that way. Peruna has a unique story dating back to the 20's, and other than the MBand's style, it's probably the oldest tradition SMU has. I thought we went through this when I was there 5 years ago, and it was resolved.
In addition to all this, I still don't understand the whole 'preserve the spirit of the wild mustang' initiative that we are kicking off by...having a horse wrangled and held on the sidelines during games. This makes no sense to me.
Stallion and Dooby, excellent points, I hope this attempt to jumpstart "tradition" (quick, look at the big horse, ignore the fact that we have only won 4 of the last 20+ games) quickly loses its luster and fades away. Just like the Mustang Maniac.
And as far as JJ changing Hawaii's colors, etc. They were in a pretty tough position with a RAINBOW as their logo and mascot, and JJ gave them the bulk of their history anyways. SMU was key in implementing the forward pass, SMU (and TCU) put Southwest football on the map, SMU played in a Rose Bowl, SMU had Doak Walker, Kyle Rote, Don Meredith, Jerry Levias, Dickerson & James, and somehow during all of that, SMU had Peruna on the sidelines. Adding another horse is ridiculous.
Sent from my Motorola brick.

Guess I would like to see what capacity this "new" animal will be used. If it's outside the stadium, that's one thing. But having that teamed with Peruna is simply wrong. Whoever earlier in the thread said change the football team, yes, but leave the few traditions we have (and there ain't many) alone, was right on.

The "official press release" doesn't read like a mascot replacement announcement. It reads like a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" production and my guess is that this horse ends up at the stables used by the SMU equestrian team--maybe as their mascot. I hope...

While I think ths is a dumb-a$$ idea (a "wild" mustang that has been trained??), I could see where Pres. Turner would be in a difficult spot to say "we're not interested" if Boone Pickens came to him with this. Turner was probably thinking if I tell him no, that shuts off the potential for any future donations.
We can only hope that Pickens made Turner an offer he couldn't refuse.

Maybe Peruna can file an appeal with the Faculty Committee which considered the cases of the players who had their scholarships yanked

Eye In the Sky wrote:I think this is a stupid idea as well, but it's something that June has wanted all along. Let's not forget the agenda behind all this...T. Boone Pickens and his money. Since he donated the horse, maybe he'll come to a few games to see the stupid thing, and maybe cut us a check somewhere down the road. It would be dumb to think that he would dontate anything close to what he has at OSU, but any amount would help. Having Roger Staubach on board doesn't hurt either.
Why does June give a [deleted] about the mascot? I don't mind uniform and helmet control for June, but this is ridiculous.

If any high ups actually read this thread, they'll hopefully understand the majority of posts here are stupid and absurd.
POSITIVES -T Boone involved with SMU, along with a host of prominent people in the Dallas area -An actual [SMU] MUSTANG on the field with Peruna, who will never be phased out - that type of hysteria is outrageous. -Getting people to come out to the Navy game, hopefully.
NEGATIVES -Can't think of any, you ponyfan hotheads can try and come up with something but it won't mount to anything.

This is pure ridiculousness! Who the hell has two mascots on the field? One that has never been and should never be a mascot of the University! Any trained horse is not a mustang, and the purpose for having an additional "mustang" on the field eludes me.
