I agree. Even if it was a close game the winner of this game was going to face this problem. If Utah lost to Oregon they fall to ~10th, if they lose to TCU (in a close game) they drop to ~20th. End of the season pundits are saying "Oregon beat a top 10 team" but for TCU it is "TCU beat a top 20 team."
The blowout makes it worse as you said.
