Game AtmosphereModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Game AtmosphereYou know...the idea of going out there and screaming my lungs off...and dancing...and yelling some more...that just isn't me.
I show up. I cheer. I yell. But I am going to do what I'm going to do. We sit in Section 104 about 6 rows off the field. Just right at the 50. I can't get over how the seats around us are constantly changing during the game. People sit for part of the 1st quarter. Then they leave. Then some people with kids show up...then students show up and take the seats for a while...then the actual ticket holders show up at half. They might stay through the middle of the 4th quarter. This is how it is every week. Different people every game and throughout the show. Maybe we smell. I bathed before the game. It is just plain bizarre. And it is that way every game for years. Be glad I was at the game...which I have been for many, many years.
Re: Game AtmosphereHow can anyone cheer when that dang Mustang Energy thing comes up every five seconds and blows out your eardrums? They still can't get the sound right.
And thanks for the Appalachian State score, but how about showing the Texas score a little more often? Everyone cares about the Longhorns' score in Texas, whether you love'em or hate'em. Could our pom squad's uniforms be any more drab? Holy cow, you turn on the TV and see sharp-looking dance teams in real sideline attire in every game, and then our girls look like they're wearing something their mom sewed. (And that bit with the junior pom squad girls is such life-force drain. At least pick a song that has the energy befitting a football game) It IS all about the schedule. Nobody around here gets fired up about beating UTEP. All in all, I thought it was a good crowd with an appropriate amount of spirit. When there are so many empty seats, it's hard to get fired up. But major thumbs up for the student section being into the game and staying well beyond halftime. I did notice a lot of people bringing infants and tiny toddlers to the game. There's a mindset that SMU games are laid-back and comfortable enough to bring your infants. Until that mindset changes, nothing else will. You just have to accept the fact that blue hairs are part of the SMU experience. Those blue hairs pay for a lot of the nice things we have at SMU. And when you encourage socializing on The Boulevard, you can't rip the See-And-Be-Seen crowd for coming to the games. If you want to yell the entire game, at least there are sections of like-minded individuals at Ford, which you couldn't always find in previous years. It's a lot easier to change your seat location than to change the overall atmosphere.
Re: Game AtmosphereNobody is asking anyone to do the marimba every play. Stand up and cheer on 3rd downs. And flash pony ears during Peruna, Hail to the Mustangs and the Go! cheer. If fans want a sterile, see-and-be-seen, quiet SMU viewing experience, they should be pointed toward the club seating. Especially if they are the movers and shakers they pretend to be.
Game AtmosphereWhat happened to 3rd down thunder?
Re: Game AtmosphereThat wasn't a personal attack, I just can believe that we have a situation where fans are having to move their tickets around to other parts of the stadium just to be able to participate in basic SMU traditions. Very perplexing.
Re: Game AtmosphereStudent section seems to be getting louder and bigger every year. One major problem is the late arrival of the people from the boulevard. People are just starting to trickle into the stadium as the team comes out of the tunnel after the rousing video to fire everyone up. Guess what? If you are not there before the game starts to watch the video and the stampede out of the tunnel then shame on you! How depressing for the team to come out all fired-up from the locker room to a boisterous crowd of 5,000 people! I guess our main goal as fans is to be more like the university of north texas than bringing back the glory days of SMU. And it feels so good to yell and scream at the top of your lungs after watching the news all week or listening to your boss or co-workers complain about everything or your teenagers wanting more $$$. Try it, you will like it. Need a better cheerleading plan and sound system although the little ones are cute but this isn't pewee football we are talking about.
Re: Game AtmosphereWhy was the band wearing red during a white out? I noticed they changed after halftime.
Re: Game AtmosphereAnyone here watch the Notre Dame - Michigan game under the lights on saturday night? That is what fans are supposed to be doing.
You're not at a funeral, you're not at the movies watching "The Notebook", you're not at a child's school play...you are at a freakin' college football game. People yell, stand, drink beer, act rowdy and generally let loose at these type of events. I'm okay if you don't want to join the crowd, but do NOT stare down the real fans who support their team on saturdays.
Re: Game Atmosphere
We were laughing about that Saturday night. The humor...and it is historic...SMU does very poorly defensively in 3rd down situations. in fact, that night that was the only time UTEP would actually land a first down....on third downs. Nonetheless...everyone around us stood up and yelled....I don't know what to say.
Re: Game Atmosphererice fans do homework, read, etc sitting in the stands. they think it's an outdoor library. i'm not kidding. and yet somehow they beat purdue who must be awful.
i'm just saying someone is worst than our fan.
Re: Game Atmosphere
