I have to say I couldn't even hear the band! I was two rows away in the student section, and the only thing I heard from them the entire game was the drumline.

Excuses are like expony18. If you are one of the ex-ponies then I'm sure you were even worse than any song the band has played. Thanks for not winning.

omg omg omg using charlie sheen winning quotes are still funny

No literally. If you were a football player then you didn't win much. Way to lose a bunch of football games.[/quote]

People who live in glass houses shouldn't run around naked. IDD

Don't expect those who care about the "Hub of SMU Spirit" to sit idly by and take it.

Is there a bat signal that goes off when someone criticizes the band on here to signal band supporters that they need to login and defend the band? Honest question. Is it an email distribution list, group text message, phone tree? Seems like there is something and I am just curious.

No, it just so happens that many of the most committed Ponyfans who both support the team regularly and post here are actually former band members. Shocking I know.

Seems like there are people who come out of the woodwork to post on band threads, but I could be wrong.

I think it goes back to the fact that the Mustang Band is one of the very few unique bands left in college football and one of the few truly unique traditions SMU can call completely it's own. I haven't seen them march in some time, but the uniform changes and the true jazz repertoire are distinct and something we should cherish. They used to high step the entire show (I don't know if they do anymore) which was also cool and very unique and quite difficult (which is probably why almost nobody else does it anymore). Also the band is a student activity, it is not underwritten by the athletic or music departments like at other universities, which means they have to do more with much less (the new band hall is a long-overdue reward). It is made up of student die-hards in a university community that doesn't exactly foster die-hard fandom. Those who recognize what a special gem it is as an institution are very quick to defend it. And they should.

Could the repertoire be updated or expanded? Probably, but it takes an arranger to create real jazz versions of contemporary songs, and I don't know if the MBand has the arrangers it used to have to convert the music. Could it be larger? Certainly, but that is a matter of recruiting and as someone else pointed out, it will never be state-school big. When it comes together, the MBand can blow away bands twice and three times their size. It just does not always come together. the good news is that it seems to do so more often than the football team.
Support the Commitment! We're all SMU Mustangs fans- we should all be committed!

I wasn't really expecting there to be much defense of that shameful performance on Friday, but I was wrong.

I'm sorry, weren't you one of the ones who said just a few days ago that a bunch of volunteer band members -- none of whom have a full scholarship to play in the band, most of whom will leave SMU with 5 or 6 figure debt, and all of whom show up early to every single game and stay through the miserable end -- "suck"? Personally, I don't believe it is helpful for the band and football team to take pot shots at each other, but how are you surprised when, in the face of ad hominem attacks, someone lashes out and points out the irony of an ex player (if that is in fact what expony18 is, as opposed to some [deleted] who regularly left in the 2nd quarter with the game still very much in doubt because he couldn't text some inane message to his bro the next section over) complaining about the quality of the band?

Several people on here have asked for constructive, legitimate suggestions, with mostly crickets chirping in response. (And for the person who (jokingly, I hope) suggested the Mustang Band emulate Southern or Prairie View A&M's band, if you think the band is "embarrassing" now, just imagine a bunch of mostly white kids trying to pull of a Southern performance. Oy.)

Edit: Who knew [deleted] was a forbidden word? It even catches misspellings of d-0-u-c-h-e. And just in case it catches inserted hyphens, just think Summer's Eve.

DON'T PLAY [deleted] OVER THE RAINBOW AT GAMES. You'd have to be [deleted] autistic to think that was appropriate. Whoever made that song selection needs to be fired along with the drunk announcer.

TO THE MODS---Having a son with special needs and working with students with challenges, I take exception to the term " (deleted) autistic". Why is it acceptable to degrade those with challenges but not June Jones?
