Yes, LA Mustang we should keep JJ even if he doesn't win another game. Remember Diaco was a high profile DC at ND and UConn got him with the terrible team they had.

No LB sold SMU. Listen to him in any press interview from day 1. June chose to sell himself and not SMU and wait for the recruits to come to him. That's why we are where we are at in football not because we can't be competitive.

Please tell me you don't really buy the coach-speak spin... Larry says all the right things, but he's out there selling Larry and everything that brings: great fundamental instruction, great defense and NBA connections out the wazzoo. June doesn't sell anything, he spends the offseason sitting on his [deleted] in Hawaii.

Uh. That's one of my points about JJ sitting on his backside. But if you don't think LB was selling SMU especially when everyone thought he was a terrible hire you weren't paying attention. Plus he hired a staff that sold both LB and SMU.

Huh? If you're implying I want to keep JJ nothing could be further from the truth. I've said JJ should be fired for the last 3 years. He is the guy who could've saved the program, but his ego got in the way. I think I've been pretty consistent with that view all along. All I'm saying now is the program is at the point where no one can save it. I would love to be proved wrong.

Every coach worth his salt sells the campus, the resources, blah, blah, blah. Larry's key differentiator is his experience. And if you believe recruits seriously say to themselves "I want to go to smu because Larry Brown says it's a school with great academics and a nice arena" then you are out of your mind. The problem is is June wouldn't even care to put in the level of effort it would take to sell free air

And diaco wasn't a hot commodity, the market was cooling on him after last season

Everyone says LB was too old. Been out of College hoops for 20 years. Out of basketball for two years. Was 71 coming in. He sold more than himself.

I disagree. That first class he brought in was loaded with retreads like Markus and kids who came along with assistants like Crandall Head and Nic. Then he kept the best of Dohs guys and recruited a second class. Year two were Ben, Sterling and Keith. Ben was underrecruited, Sterling's brother played for Larry and Keith wanted to stay local for family. This has been built on good fortune, smart hires and great coaching. Now he can really go after kids that would have been a stretch two years ago.
