BTW, for those of you against even considering Mack, I don't get that at all. I understand if you want a young guy, part of me does too, but I believe Mack is one of the few people who could turn this program around quickly. He is the complete opposite of JJ. After hiring a staff, the first thing he would do is start meeting with local HS coaches and let them know SMU is a great school, a great place for your players and I will make them a winner.

Absolutely yes on Mack. Absolutely. I'll even switch the head on the JJ statue.

I was scared to hire Larry Brown, but he won me over. While there are certainly old guys who just want a check, he reminded me that there are guys who jut love to coach.

If Mack comes to us for the job (like LB did), it says to me that he still wants to win.

If we have to talk Mack into coaching again, he is not the right hire.

I'm not debating if this is a good or bad job but after a few weeks in the studio Mack may see a much easier road to retirement. Or maybe he's like LB and can't stand to be away from the game. What do you think ESPN pays him, a million for the season? For him to be seriously interested I bet we would have to double that - 2 or 2.5 million a year and a nice budget for his staff. I wouldn't be surprised if Hart has already talked with him. I believe he still lives in Austin.

Its the same reason a coach like Larry Coker, who won a national title and reached the pinnacle of college coaching in America, went to a program like UTSA in his twilight years. HE'S A FOOTBALL COACH. That's what these guys do. For Mack, maybe he misses going into living rooms with prospects and being able to get that kid to commit. Maybe he's tired of just going through the motions on TV. Its in their blood. Some of these guys are only truly happy when they are working. Plus, the stress level of coaching a program like UT and then going to SMU is well.....not that stressful really.

And is Mack interested? His name has been linked to the SMU job now for a few weeks and there has been no statement of disinterest from Mack. All it would take to quell this would be a statement saying "I'm flattered by the interest from SMU but I'm happily retired from coaching and enjoying my role as an analyst." If Mack or his people aren't interested then they certainly are not acting like it....yet.

Maybe he just wants to stick it to the University of Texas and finish with a better record than the longhorns. If so, that's good enough for me...

Well its gone public now so its out there. Mack and his people can squash all of the speculation with a brief statement saying he is happily retired. If we don't hear any sort of statement then you have to at least assume there is some level of interest on Mack's behalf.

Hardly relevant considering that was a career change and he isn't concerned about the money. Similarly, Mack Brown wouldn't be worried about the money either (though his agent certainly would).

We got Larry Brown because the guy has a passion for coaching basketball, and even went as far to sit in on other team's practices.... for free.

EDIT: I'm not against Mack. I'd LOVE to see him come to SMU. I just don't think that's a reasonable thing to assume.

As for Mack clashing with Turner...Turner will be gone soon enough...

One of the most significant hires will be the President of SMU in the next couple of years. Evidently AK Starr has been very friendly to Baylor Athletics - would love to see similar hire at SMU.

Maybe we should try to get Wallace Hall on the SMU Board of Regents. Turner will be gone in not time.

As coaches, Mac Brown was to UT what Barry Switzer was to the Cowboys.
