I literally haven't seen or read anything anywhere that says hiring Chad Morris is a bad move for SMU. Most places think he's crazy to come here given our situation. He was a major player in job openings at Texas Tech, Louisville, and probably would've gotten the HC job at Clemson if Dabo had left for Florida.

We just got arguably the best assistant coach in the nation who is a Texas native and a high school coaching legend. Considering we are the worst program in America right now I'd say that is a slam dunk home run grand slam hat trick royal flush hire by any measure.

I bet Tech is rethinking their decision. Morris is still an unknown but Coach Bro is losing support quickly in Lubbock.

His new contract suggests he'll be there for a while...Stidham is likely controlling Pretty Boy's fate.

Coach Bro made the mistake of hiring a bunch of his old running buddies instead of top notch coaches. If they don't see marked improvement next year then the honeymoon might be over.

So is there going to be a link for this press conference? Still haven't seen one..

Man, I hope I am wrong! My only problem is I heard all of the same compliments about Bennett....You can't deny Bennett was young at the time, energetic, touted as a defensive guru, had Texas roots, all the Texas high school coaches were on board etc.......and by the way, I've heard everyone talk up the influence of the high school coach on the recruit's decision before and disagree. I acknowledge the influence is their but believe it's minimal. My only hope is that Chad has abilities in the area of talent evaluation and is able to zero on finding the diamonds in the rough.....

Phil Bennett was a quality assistant coach but had never even interviewed for a D1A head coaching position. Morris has been linked with almost every big job that has come down the line the last several years. Not to mention offensive innovation is what sells these days. Morris is light years ahead of Phil Bennett at this point of his career. Phil also was hamstrung by our stupid academic restrictions. June was the first coach to operate without one hand tied behind his back by the university. Had PB had that opportunity he might still be roaming our sidelines.

He was a proven recruiter at Clemson, so at least there's that.

PB also had a 6-6 team, same winning % as one of our teams entering the Hawaii Bowl and one leaving the Armed Forces Bowl.

Great point. PB was on the verge of breaking through (rice 1 yard line). PB was not as highly regarded but was the best we could do after Cavan. Remember we were seriously considering Charlie Waters from Lake Highlands HS which shows how bad our candidates were at the time.

He got some really good players in here - not enough- but did not have the resources CM will have. He had a Semi retired AD and academic restrictions thT are gone.

He made mistakes particularly game decisions. He just may not have been HC material and some did doubt it at the time. CM By all accounts has the full package.

PB never put up the resume that Morris brings in outside of a few brief years at KState.

Phil also didn't have the lighter academic situation that June did help get put in place, nor was simmons there for an education college degree plan, to recruit to a wider pool of kids. and he was able to recruit guys that June sent to the NFL. i can't think of (maybe i'm missing someone) anyone that JJ&Co recruited that is in the NFL now. maybe beasley? Margus is, but he was sort of dropped in June's lap so he could stay here to train w/ his T&F coach who had moved to UTA b/c we cut the program (Thanks Title IX).

for all the damage he did towards the end, June did get some things changed - it may not be perfect - but it's WAY different now than before he got here. you have to admit that. Bennett was still hamstrung by Pye era restrictions.

Phil was a great guy, very personable, good X's & O's guy, likable, but he wasn't good at all the other stuff that goes w/ being a HC. HCCM has been a HC at the HS level, at several stops. early on he decided he wanted to coach college, and has done everything right to get to be in a position to be a College HC. don't think for 2 seconds he isn't ready for this job. he's been making calculated steps with his career to get to this point.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

actually Bennett interviewed for about 4 jobs-he just got turned down for all of them. I can say with a clean conscience that I strongly urged against signing the life-time defensive coordinator. With Morris you get a guy that checks off every box on the Check List
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Beasley was a PB recruit that stayed on when JJ took over. Sanders, Beachum, Morstead, LeRibeus, Robinson, and McCann were all PB guys.

JJ gets credit for Sterling Moore, Chris Banjo, and Taylor Thompson.

Have you BEEN to Lubbock lately?

No, he's not.

There's acknowledgement that Tuberville left the cupboard pretty bare, (not June Jones bare, but pretty bare nonetheless) and fixing that is going to take time.
