You can google the colors.. not quite a Navy Blue.. but not quite Royal Blue
On several art or painting websites, they list their color palate and say, "Royal blue (pms 286)." Others call it Cobalt blue.
Here's one that calls it "classic blue," and looks like ED era blue:

most importantly, I hope you asked Orisini one other question: White Helmet?

He didn't address the white helmet. Orsini basically said the administration wanted to make the school colors uniform throughout the university. He said there were lots of different colors scehemes for the school colors including some of the schools within the university. The colors were focused grouped and this is what they came up with. He did say the blue on the helmet was too dark if I remember correctly.
Also Rich gave ponyfans a shout when he plugged the AD Blog. He said Richard Sweet wrote about Ponyfans in his last entry.

SWEET!!! These are the colors I think of when I think of SMU! Now, we just need the White Helmet w/ Red Mustang.
Will the moderators of Ponyfans.com be changing the website colors as well?

I didn't ask the question, but Orsini seemed very prepared to answer the question posed to him which was only addressed a uniform change.

Orsini pointed out that the logo for Doherty's radio show was out of compliance.

I thought that we tried that when we opened Ford, and that was the Navy color. Who's springing for new band uniforms this time?
I also agree that along with uniform colors needs to go a uniform logo, i.e. the traditional mustang logo, not the curvy SMU abomination.

For what it is worth, here is a link on colors:
http://www.mfa-uk.co.uk/images/colorchart.htm
The blue PMS 286 is appealing and certainly not a navy.
The red PMS 186 is deeper than the historical red I remember from the sixties, but compares nicely with the red from the 80's
Let standardize, please, including a logo. Our overall brand needs to be fix iin everyone's mind. Think long term!

186 looks about right for crimson and if they stick with using the red jerseys, I can agree with that. They will have to go back to a white helmet in my opinion because the blue they picked would not have the same effect the dark navy blue helmets have. The blue is too much a primary looking color to go with a red mustang and the mustang should be red. I will withhold my final opinion on the blue until I see the actual uniforms. It appears in the color chart above to be a darker color of blue than the 8o's uniforms, but lighter than what we have now. Definitely not Yale blue though which in my opinion should be our color as originally called out by the University.
I hate "focus group" selections. The school colors are what they are and not a matter of opinion. You don't see Texas or A&M or ND or USC, etc. screwing around with their colors.
I have no power to change the decision, so I will learn to live with it...eventually.

thank you pk - couldn't agree more
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Searched the colors to see if I could find other teams that used them. That is really the best indication to me: find a team that uses them on their jerseys.
Watch the Florida Gators play. It is the blue on their jerseys.
Watch a hockey game. This is the blue that is used to make the “blue line.â€
Watch Kentucky basketball. It is Kentucky blue.
If I were to guess, the football jersey (in blue) would look a little like this:
In red, it is Illinois State:
Or Miami (OH):

This is a perfect example of the current state of the SMU administration with no understanding or connection to the history and traditions of the University. When the school colors were originally selected, there was a reason for not just picking "Blue" and "Red." The University wanted to make a statement about the school and its academic goals. It was for this reason that they selected "Yale blue" and "Harvard Crimson" as these two schools epitomized the academic excellence SMU desired to emulate. The choice of school colors was made to make a statement. Obviously that thought has gotten lost over the years. How sad...we now choose a color based upon the opinion of a focus group.

For the record, the color guide I linked to has remain unchanged for some time, at least a couple of years. I am not sure if it will change soon. The red mentioned by Orsini is not the one in the guide.

Why do we pick and choose which academic goals to embrace and which ones to not? Where are those espousing the greatness of what Dr. Pye envisioned for SMU student-athletes? I'm sure at that time, the faculty along with Dr. Pye felt that they, "wanted to make a statement about the school and its academic goals." IMO, I feel the football team's graduation rate of late does a better job demonstrating academic achievement than going with one color or another.
I had thought it was Stallion who some time ago held the position that anything other than Harvard crimson and Yale blue were blasphemous; perhaps I had the opinions confused. I now agree with what Stallion mentioned of the colors earlier.
And yes, I respect SMU's tradition, its stated goals, etc etc...but I also feel it is important to evolve from a marketing/image standpoint.

I hear ND is going to teal and pink, with some kind of a faux paisley pattern on its helmets.
