I thought all the coaches at A$M were fired. I thought they had the record for firing coaches until our DP. ![]() Ron Meyer was the last coach to leave SMU for greener pastures, unless you call former coach Forrest Gregg leaving the AD job to coach the Shreveport Pirates in the WFL or some such new pro league. The great ones do leave "stepping stone" jobs like SMU has become, or has Bennett since since Matty Bell.
The worst part of the newsletter is his violation in talking to alumni about prospective recruits...that is a direct violation. Several coaches have such letters...but the administration knows and they do not talk about the recruits. His secrecy and talking about recruits is really what got him in trouble. As I understand it, they can't recruit those players any more or something to this affect...can't remember. Could be the best hire...don't know but we will see....Go Mustangs!!!
Stallion is right again.
At first I wasn't very excited about Franchione, but with more thought, I think he could be a good fit at SMU. We can't worry about hiring a guy that might leave if he takes SMU to repeat bowl games. That would be a great "problem" for SMU to have for a change. Oh my God....wouldn't it be just "terrible" if Fran gets us on the winning path, wins CUSA, wins a couple of bowl games and gets another big time gig.....gosh now that would be terrible for currently 1-7 SMU!......LOL And to think last time our choices were Phil Bennett or Charlie Waters and now you guys with SMU sitting at 1-7 are complaining about SMU possibly landing Dennis Franchione. Bowden, Barnett, Franchione, Neuheisel....lets get one signed! C-ya @ Milos!
Hell, I love my firm, My Boss is great, but [deleted], every man has his price, you have yours, I have mine. And Franni has his. As if Bennett would be sticking around if the right offer came along. Nope, it's business, and its life. Live it and succeed. -CoS
I don't think that's the biggest concern we should have with Franchiphony. I seriously have dobts that he could turn the program around.
I live in FW. I had to endure the Fran years here. I saw a lot of him and talked to a lot of TCU folks about him. He had good talent here. Not all of it was his doing. He left for greener pastures, which happens. But he was a jerk when he did it. I admit, I thought it was funny at the time, but it was TCU. ![]() He did nothing at Alabama. The move to a$m was a lateral move, at best. I thought at the time, and still think that the move was an attempt to cover the fact that he knew he couldn't win there. I remember talking to some friends who are aggies when they hired him and telling them that he was a fraud, and that he wouldn't be the program savior they were counting on. He has done nothing positive there. Not to mention, he is divisive. Hasn't fit in in College Station because his wife refuses to live there, so I understand. I wouldn't want to live there either, but that's part of the problem with him. If you are going to coach somewhere, especially there, you'd better embrace the locals. The shady newsletter club is another example. For a few extra thousand, the guy was willing to risk NCAA violations. SMU has a divided enough fan base. We don't need someone who is going to make things worse. And I think he would. He might, and it is a big if, be able to recruit some great talent. He might be able to win more games for us. But I really, really don't think he'd leave the program in a good place. Just my .02 Wow. That was a really long post. Sorry!
I guess I have to change my mind after hearing all of the negatives about Fran, Barnett, Bowden, etc. We need Miles, Saban, or Spurrier, and nothing less. If they have ever sinned like these others then we go to Jimmy Johnson, Joe Paterno, and Tom Landry. To heck with these low lifes that have merely turned around perennial losing programs and have openly stated they would like to coach at SMU. My goodness, WE ARE SMU. Miles, Saban or Spurrier and no less.
