Gilbert, a junior from Lake Travis, will have two years of eligibility remaining because he suffered a shoulder injury during the second game of the season, against BYU. He can get this season back with a medical hardship because he played in less than 30 percent of the Longhorns’ games.

I'm certainly not an expert, but I think some of the discussion on questioning whether it is a given that Gilbert will actually have 2 yrs of eligibility remaining is the ncaa rule of having only 5 calendar years in which to play 4 years. apparently, there are examples of medical waivers not granted because regular redshirt years were taken, thereby exhausting the 5 yr limit rule.
Gilbert will have to contend with his sit-out year adding to his 5 yr total.
to me, there doesn't seem to be a lot of consistency in the ncaa determinations, as I have often been surprised that some have gained extra years and others have not.
still, I'm figuring all parties in this case (SMU and Gilbert) are aware of what is available.

This could be perfect. Assuming KP gets it together, it should be his job to lose next year. GG could learn the system while sitting out his transfer year, then be ready to compete for the job in 2013, which coincidentally would be Printz's first year on campus. Lot of HS QB talent there.

Why do we need Gilbert?? We have Kaiser who seems to have been totally written off by members of this board when he was very sick his frosh year and could achieve very little missing so much practice. He is just this season getting things under control and making progress. We have Preston who was cheered as a top recruit with talent and considerable leadership and who even enrolled early to be more prepared and ready for 2012. Why the need to suddenly discard him for 2 more years? In the interim, we have Padron who has 2 more years of eligibility and all we know about his progress and maturity is that he threw 2 bad passes in the first game in front of the biggest crowd that he had ever seen and has been relegated to non-existant. Then we have Printz looming on the horizon to come right in, understudy for several years and then take over and lead us to the promise land. Yes, Gilbert was a HS blue chipper, but has not really demonstrated that at the college level. Why should a program be built around a 1 year QBs ( at the expense of developing QBs that were hand picked to meet the particular passing skills of the R & S) who comes into a new system and spends his 1 year learning and not necessarily winning ? A program should be built on continuity of QBs given at least 2 years as the starter so they have the experience to perform in the big games and the team learns to be in sync and coordinated with their style. If I were a coach I would pass on any QB transfer who would not be eligible for at least 2 years for the continuity, morale, stability ...etc. of a program.

I would afford Mr. Gilbert a sincere thanks for his interest, but inform him that I have a program to build and that he is too late. I have hand picked recruits to whom I have made promises to develop and afford the opportunity to compete and you are not only not part of that progression, but might actually impede my ability to convice future recruits that they can rely on my word based on the status of the QB situation on which they made their committment to join the program.

FWIW, Padron has 1 year of playing time remaining. And I have never heard of having too many good QBs.

People have written of Kaiser because every single practice report mentions him throwing at least one interception. He may turn out great but thats why he has been written off.

Who in the heck is talking about discarding Preston or kaiser or anyone else. Competition is good. You say coaches have made a promises to players they will have an opportunity to compete, why do you feel like coaches are not obligated to bring in more competition?

And if the coaches allow Gilbert to come here how is that different than hand picking a qb out of high school?

I found more on medical hardship waiver vs. medical redshirt and all that. This is a quote from the Big 12's stance on it. It is handled individually by conferences now and no longer by the ncaa.

If the student-athlete has two or more seasons of medial redshirt because of an injury or illness
(or one season of medical redshirt and one season of medical hardship), the Compliance Office
can file for an extension of the five-year clock (a sixth year) only after the student-athlete has
reached the end of the existing five-year clock.
