Going from 2,500 to 4-5,000 kids is doable. Apathy is explainable. How many kids make it to Moody and how many want to score tickets? And don't tell me it's that kids love basketball. They are embarrassed of SMU'S football team and have been for the last 30 years that is is an institution. And bringing 30,000 to Texas Stadium is something commendable for a school our size. Baylor doesn't get close to bringing that to Cowboys stadium in the game against tech and tcu hasn't even gotten close to bringing that amount to Cowboys stadium.

No it says that a lot of SMU students come to SMU with other allegiances

Baylor was 4-8 in 2006 and had 44% student attendance

That 13% is with grad students. If you do 1,500-2,500 over the 6,000 undergrads... you get 25%/40% of the student body attending...same as baylor then. Apples to apples.

And they don't come with other allegiances to Baylor and TCU? Hmm... okay...

Pony Boss how old are you?

Because I've been watching SMU football for 50 years since I was a little tyke and been to every SMU/TCU game and every SMU/Baylor game for about 40 years. I've seen TCU and Baylor when they were up and seen them when they were down and seen SMU when they were up and seen them when they are down. It has always been a problem

historically TCU and Baylor have had a much higher percentage of Texas students than SMU

just did a check and Baylor has 70% in state enrollment and SMU slightly less than 50%

TCU is 61% per cent in state but it looks like they are expand enrollment in the freshman class to more of an SMU model of 50/50. Historically, I can assure you TCU had much higher in state enrollment than SMU

"For the first time since 1979, TCU’s freshman class Texan population is projected to be less than 50 percent. This will bring the total TCU Texas population to around 61 percent Brown said.

“It was not a goal to get to where we are with fewer than 50 percent Texans,” Brown said."

I haven't been around SMU a lot as some posters here but I talk with my fellow alums and alll we talk is football and every male I know loves football...even the foreign nerdy kids (no offense intended)

All due respect Stallion, I recognize you have been around a long time but I don't think it's a hopeless case. There's room to grow and fix these problems.

Baylor has strong, similar graduate degrees too including a Law School and a Divinity School

I never said it was hopeless-I said its a long term well ingrained 50 year problem. Have you ever seen a Baylor opener in Waco and seen the hordes of freshman running onto the field. SMU is not Baylor thank god but they have historically been able to incorporate their students into their fan base at a much higher rate. SMU needs to have a plan

The Baylor Line -this includes the Freshman Class only (and I presume 1st year students) Watch all 7 minutes and tell me SMU freshman support the program in a similar percentage

Did You Watch It?

"The Baylor Line is the core of Baylor Spirit and Traditions as an organization composed entirely of new incoming students."

BTW the chances of this ending in a major lawsuit dwarfing the Aggy Bon Fire collapse is huge

I've watched the Baylor line. I was there at that game where we got crushed unfortunately lol

I agree SMU needs to have a plan now. It is indeed well ingrained and it has to be tackled from all angles...on the field performance, marketing, new traditions similar to what baylor and others do to get the freshmen involved in football games etc. We can learn from what is being done in basketball.

Pony Boss wrote:It just doesn't make sense to me, you are all making it seem as if SMU is this special case and can never be as appealing. I doubt Chad Morris left his gravy train of a job in Clemson to come to a forever inferior product, with a 20,000 fanbase limit, that will never be P5, and will never win more than a lower tier bowl. Career suicide is what that seems. Just asking the questions no one seems to be asking...I get that things have been a certain way forever, but doesn't mean they always will be. Bet you anything tcu and baylor never were as appealing as they are now. Never filled a stadium with more than 30k of their fans until now. Again, don't buy that SMU football will always be an inferior option.

Career suicide? SMU is the perfect stepping stone. Morris will be here 4-5 years, turn a 1-11 team into an 8,9,10 win bowl team, and then bolt to a big time P5 job for 2-3x the money. He knows it's likely that SMU will never be invited to the big dance, will never consistently fill the stadium, etc. etc......but he could care less. His next job will come with all those perks.

Just enjoy the ride while it lasts, much like Larry Brown.
