Former Mustang Running Back Rex Garner

will be inducted into the Pittsburg State University Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame on September 11, 2004. Garner finished a two-year career at PSU as the fourth-leading rusher in school history, despite appearing in just 19 games for the Gorillas.

The Pittsburg native, who played two seasons at NCAA Division I Southern Methodist University before transferring to PSU, rushed for 1,786 yards and 12 touchdowns on 385 carries, twice earning honorable mention NAIA All-America honors.

Garner carried the ball 185 times for 931 yards (5.0 ypc) and seven touchdowns as a junior in 1975. He earned NAIA All-District 10 honors and was named an honorable mention All-American that year.

As a senior in 1976, he carried the ball 200 times for 855 yards (4.3 ypc) and five touchdowns. Garner earned first-team All-CSIC, first-team NAIA All-District 10 and honorable mention NAIA All-America honors.

Following his collegiate career, he signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns.

Garner, who graduated from PSU in 1978, is an insurance agent in Pittsburg.

Thanks for that info. I remember seeing Rex play at SMU as a freshman on the 1973 team.
