Ponies add JC linemanDT will have four years of eligibility.
See story on PonyFans.com homepage.
Wait a minute. We can't sign this guy. He's a JUCO, and Stallion said JUCOs can't transfer to SMU...
If this kid had "scholarship offers from every school in the Big 12 except Texas," I don't see how this can be anything but a great development. Is that really true?

Not to worry Punch, I'm sure that Stallion will be along any minute to tell us that he actually predicted this all along, and its only been his consistent crying on this message board that brought the evil faculty senate to its knees and forced this revelation. After taking credit for and swearing that he's been right about this for the last 15 years, he'll then asssure us that this recruit doesnt actually count as a juco transfer because he was academically qualified out of high school and he doesnt get any stars on Rivals. In fact, it was never reported on Rivals or any other internet recruiting resource that SMU had offered him a scholarship, and that means it didnt actually happen. This whole thing is a ruse perpetrated by the cheerleaders who suck up to the Administration, and want to reinstate Kenneth Pye as the university president, despite the fact he's dead.
Should be a great addition, although i'm sure he will brought along slowly since he hasn't played in two years. I think Mouton has the jersey #95. Keep an eye out for a few position changes in the next several days, should be interesting!
Re:
Unfotunately, signing ONE JUCO recruit that was recruited by Big 12 schools doesn't mean that we are actively recruiting JUCOs. Stallion is right in that we need to sign 3 to 4 every year to balance out positions, address weaknesses, and to get competitive. That is how Tulsa turned it around last year, and that is what TCU has done. Signing the moderately recruited Mouton does not mean that SMU has bought into the JUCO route yet.
Let me be the first to congratulate SMU, coach Bennett, BUS, Dr Turner Dr Pye, Stallion, and my dear Uncle Morty on this most momentous of occasions. As I was telling Anna Nicole last night we could sure use another big man , if you know what I mean and I think she did. Anyway I see that my dear Uncle Morty hasn't burried the hatchet yet. As I was also saying to Anna Nicloe, Uncle Mort is loaded. We must be very nice to him. She agreed. Anna and I will seee you soon Uncle Mort. Bring money.
First of all I'm glad someone finally broke the code as I figured out who the "surprise" was about 3 months ago. Second, he hasn't played in two years. Third, JCs don't redshirt a guy that heralded when they know he can be eligible to transfer the next year. Fourth, do a search on the internet and if you can find one mention of him as being recruited much less highly recruited I'd be surprised. Fifth, why would I be upset that we signed a JUCO when that's what I've said we should do 15 years ago-welcome to my world. Sixth, just like all the rest of our JUCO recruits-he was fully qualified out of High School of he could not of signed with us this year. I congratulate SMU for finallly seeing the light but he remains in the small sliver of JUCO players who can be admitted to SMU. I really think he did a great job in finding guys like Devin Lowery and Mouton who fell through the holes. But, not one of our JUCOs compares in reputation to one of the 5-6 or so JUCOs signed by Tech or TCU for instance. Obviously, Bennett is doing everything possible to short-cut SMU's restrictive JUCO transfer policy. More power to him. Hell, I thought Bennett was quoting me when he said last winter when he said he hopes to sign 3-4 JUCOs a year. What I want to know is why people who attacked me for saying we should have been doing this for years now think its so swell.
Hey, Bus. SURPRISE!!!
And what a lovely surprise it is. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re:
Frankly, I don't recall anybody attacking you for suggesting we needed to sign 3-4 JUCO's every year, but if being a martyr makes you feel better, great. What is your problem with the JUCO's being qualified when they graduated. So only ignorant unqualified JUCO's are worth anything? Recruiting a good JUCO player is just as hard as recruiting a great high school player. There are only so many to go around and the big state schools have an upper hand in recruiting the JUCO player just like they do the high school player. Yeah, this guy is probably not going to play this year, so what? When is the last time we signed a 305 pound DT? Are you saying the guy lied when he said he had been offered by all these other schools? You do not have the capacity to be happy about anything, so go get laid and take your mind off of SMU football...it would be sad for you to go to your grave such a pompus and unhappy person.
because obviously you can't build a football team off of finding a guy like Mouton who didn't play his senior year in high school and redshited as freshman in JC or lucking out and finding a nugget like Lowery who qualified after his class graduated. The JUCO players SMU gets are full qualifiers out of high school which generally means they weren't good enough to get a Division 1A scholarship out of High School. That would be true of all the JUCOS we signed in both FB and BB except for Eckert who did sign a letter of intent with one of the Louisiana directional schools. So Bennett out of desperation most likely is going after that 15% or so who were qualifiers out of high school and so can sign-preferably after their first year in JUCO. The best JUCO prospects are the other 85%-none of which have listed SMU as a school they have interest in about 20 years. And I'm also saying there is no way in hell that a kid could be offered by all the schools in the Big 12 except UT as well as a few SEC and ACC teams BEFORE his senior season and not be picked up by at least 1 of about 5 major recruiting services. Plus to believe that story you have to also believe that with every school in this part of the country having already offered the kid Phil Bennett was the last to know. Plus every school decided to back off a 6-3, 295 pound defensive tackle who wasn't even injured. I believe he very well might have been recruited by all those schools but I certainly don't believe that they all offered.
